Designing a rocket is not rocket science at all.
Manufacturing a rocket at scale, at an affordable price, takes a 1000 times more effort.

#elonmusk is on a mission, but this time it’s not a space mission.

The world’s richest man is trying to correct the misperception that coming up with the design of a complex product is the toughest part of the process.

He explains why in fact manufacturing is the hardest part, adding that there is anywhere between 1,000% - 10,000% more effort that goes into the production system.

His key take-aways from the video are:

• Manufacturing is underrated and design is overrated.

• A lot more work goes into the production system than the thing itself.

• The Raptor’s manufacturing system cost 100x more effort than the design of the engine.

• Manufacturing is fundamentally under-appreciated by people who don't have mfg experience.

• Design is the easiest part, not the hardest.

He's essentially saying the Russians were making their rocket designs in a prototyping way, and he is setting up a mass production line to get to an affordable unit cost.

It's like my personal favorite line:
From 1 unit that works, to 10,000 that don't fail.

Happy Friday everyone!
