An interview question that I think most of us wish would just go away:

❔Why are you leaving your current company❔

The answer is often complicated and sometimes a little painful...

But employers still ask it, likely because they want to try to understand your motivations, gain insights into your attitude towards work, evaluate your self-awareness, or maybe even identify if your reasons for leaving are present in their organization, too.

Regardless, answering this question effectively takes some tact. Try to aim for a response that emphasizes the positive aspects of your next career move, while avoiding negativity towards your current employer.

For instance, you could focus on:

🔷 Growth and development - Explain how the new opportunity aligns better with your career goals and offers greater potential for learning and advancement
🔷 New challenges - Show your excitement for tackling new projects, taking on new responsibilities, or solving new problems to expand your skill set
🔷 Company culture and values - Emphasize how the company’s mission, values, or culture are a match for your own beliefs, values, and work style

Essentially, highlight your excitement for the future rather than your negative feelings towards the past. Avoid critical remarks about those with whom you work, complaints about salary, issues with a toxic culture, or any overly personal details.

Letting your response revolve around the future, instead of the past, allows you to be honest, while still keeping it professional!
