You can be the total package but still be at the wrong address...

I came across this quote a while back and it just landed.

And no, not in relation to my failed romantic relationships (although there have been a few 😅), but rather for my career in HR.

At times in my career I have struggled with finding my place and my worth which heavily impacted my mindset

“They aren't listening to my ideas” = my ideas are bad
“They aren’t taking my advice” = I mustn't get it
“They are resistant to change” = I am not influential enough
“They aren’t asking for my opinion” = I don’t know what I am doing
“They didn’t invite me to that meeting” = my voice doesn’t matter
“I don’t feel comfortable doing what they have asked of me” = I need to harden up

What I have learnt now in hindsight, is that often it wasn’t me - it was them 🙄

Unfortunately, there are still many managers and leaders who do not see the value that HR can bring to their business, no matter how amazing you are

So if you are in a role where you feel misaligned, under-utilised, ethically-compromised or if you are second guessing your value, take the time to reflect and understand why 👀

It might be that you need to refine your skills, or it might simply be that you are at the wrong address, and there are many other workplaces desperate for someone just like you to help guide them and make an impact 🙌

I’ve got a bad reputation.

❌Some people don’t trust me
❌Some people question my motives
❌Some people tense up when I enter a room
❌Some people pause their conversations if I’m near

It’s got nothing to do with who I am though, and everything to do with the ‘HR’ in my job title.

What do you think of when you hear HR? Many answers aren't flattering. Very few reflect the hard work that most HR professionals contribute.

✏️You may see me taking notes while your issued a warning, but you don't see the hour I spent coaching your manager on how to do it in a respectful and considered way.

✉️You may see my name on another annoying email reminding you to do the engagement survey, but you won't see the hours of work I put in after it to champion change directly from your feedback.

🔔 You may see me sitting across from you as you are told your role has been disestablished, but you don't see the previous 4 versions of the structure I influenced to change to ensure there were redeployment opportunities for you.

✂️You may see me associating with that manager you can’t stand, but you don’t hear me calling out and giving feedback on their shitty behaviour.

📈You may see me in the boardroom at senior leadership meetings, but you don't hear me advocating for you or asking “how will this impact our people?”.

🍎You may not think of me when you celebrate that new employee benefit, but you didn't see the hours I put into constructing the business case to get the budget for it.

HR is often a relentless and thankless job, where most of our work goes unnoticed.

But the value we add is always evident, even if not to the people we impact
