At Rice University, Daniel Preston and a graduate student had a stunningly interesting discovery.

They are using dead spiders as mechanical grippers. Yes, they use dead spiders as grippers...

But how? It turns out that the spiders use hydraulics to move their legs. They have what's called a prosoma chamber which contracts, sending inner body fluid into their legs, making them extend.

Scientists have chosen wolf spiders that can lift significantly more than 130% of their weight.

Assistant Professor - Daniel Preston says that such a solution could be suitable, for example, for pick-and-place processes appearing in electronics assembly.

With this discovery, they spotlight the breakthrough branch of science - necrobotics.

I don't know how I would react to such a grip, considering my arachnophobia...

Robo-slime.

A robot made of magnetic slime could grab objects inside your body.

A robot made of magnetic slime with a custard-like consistency can navigate narrow passages, grasp objects and fix broken electrical circuits. It could be deployed inside the body to perform tasks such as retrieving objects swallowed by accident.

Researchers invented this robot at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Although it shows promise for medical use, safety concerns remain due to the toxicity of its magnetic particles.

An interesting field of robotics, indeed! 🧠

3 robots. 6 arms! 🦾

Dual-arm robots performing pick & place.

Collaboration between robots and an interesting approach to process automation. 🤝

However, the most important thing in manufacturing is the results, not whether 3 robots were used. Hence, the question that comes to my mind is whether it is not possible to robotize this process more (cost)efficiently. 💰

Great dexterity, synchronization between the robots, but I am missing the business case strongly... Change my mind if I wrongly interpret it.

Packing different sizes? No problem! 📦

Great technology from Sparck Technologies helps take care of the environment a bit, especially in this era of the eCommerce boom. ♻️

Under the moving white conveyor, a long piece of cardboard gets cut to fit just before it wraps around the order.

To make sure it's the right size, the order goes through a 3D scanner that measures the length, width, and height of the object. This helps create packaging that fits perfectly, making the whole process smooth and precise.

Of course, a considerable amount of cardboard is saved in addition! 🦾

To assist farmers in their work! 🌾

Meet the Grain Weevil, a robot designed to make handling grain bins much easier!

This robot is built to help farmers with tasks like leveling grain, breaking up clumps, and moving grain from the walls of the bin into an extraction auger.

The Grain Weevil is a small robot, measuring 20 by 20 inches and weighing 50 pounds.

It uses two spinning parts to move the grain around, and its battery lets it work for 90 minutes to two hours after just a 20-minute charge. Right now, it works about as fast as a person with a shovel and is controlled remotely by a person.

In the future, they hope to make it even smarter so it can do more tasks on its own.

P.S. Are there other robots being made to help farmers with their work? 👨🏻‍🌾

Robots can be sculptors! 🪛

For centuries, humans have worked hard to create detailed and lifelike art.

Sculptors spent years perfecting every tiny detail, but in 2024, machines are starting to take over.

Companies like Robotor and Monumental Labs use robots that work faster, never get tired, and make fewer mistakes.

Some people worry that human creativity is fading, but this may be a new way for art to grow.

With robots handling the hard work, artists might focus more on new ideas, bringing back the beauty and detail we once loved.

Or perhaps it means with more AI and robotics, people will lose interest in art. 🎭

Those are just my assumptions - what's your take?

Fenceless application using AIRSKIN.

Transforming an industrial robot into a collaborative application.

It’s just a soft touch required to stop this huge KUKA robot. 🤏🏼

AIRSKIN produces smart safety pads that open up the possibility of collaborating with a human.

They rely on industrial robots, so robots with AIRSKIN are proven to be faster than any cobot solution on the market. 💨

A very interesting alternative to a cobot.

In particular, you still save floor space so you can install and fit more machines on your site and you can produce faster due to the shorter cycle time and increased industrial payload.

Fenceless.

This is not a 2050 warehouse.

This is a modern air hub of Amazon. 🛫

Amazon uses robots to help sort and ship billions of packages each year.

At Amazon Air, the company's main air hub in Kentucky, hundreds of self-charging robots zoom across the warehouse floor to organize orders. These robots, called “drives,” follow small stickers on the floor to know where to go and when to speed up or slow down.

Amazon has 750,000 robots in its facilities, and it’s even deploying more new types of robots that can sort items of different shapes and sizes.

However, Amazon emphasizes that robots won’t replace people, as humans are still needed for problem-solving tasks.

P.S. Can you guess how many robots they had back in 2013? No spoilers please, Xavier Van Chau 👀

The app, developed by Dominik Hackl, is used to learn how to play the piano through visual cues that appear under a specific piano key.

3D musical notation systems assume the use of mixed reality, which combines the power of VR and AR.

The question is: when learning to play an instrument at the very beginning, it's more about feeling the length of the key and its weight - or just “something to press“?

Anyway, a great show-case of the possibilities of augmented and virtual reality!
Tesla's humanoid got an upgrade! 🤖

A lot more Model S than Cybertruck.

Elon Musk announced a new robot called Optimus Gen 2. It's way better than the old one. It's lighter by 10 kilograms, moves 30% faster, and its movements are much smoother, resembling human motion more closely.

It has brand-new hands with more freedom of movement (11 degrees), faster parts that help it move quicker, and sensors on its fingers to handle things more skillfully. ✊🏼

Robot squirrel climbing telecoms masts! 🐿️

This climbing robot developed by Acuity Robotics Ltd can reach the top (in 80 seconds) without worrying about RF signal problems and is able to collect data and images.

Many businesses want to get rid of high-risk jobs like working at heights because it is expensive to deploy multiple people to help one person climb a mast, the maintenance costs associated with the climbing infrastructure are high, and because the RF (radio frequency) risk and working at height concerns frequently prevent workers from reaching the top.

Flying drones can be recharged safely and quickly while still in flight with this solution. 🔋

The first question that came to my mind was: Why would a drone charge while hovering in the air and not on the ground? I decided to do some research to find out why they decided to charge the drone in the air.

The crucial point here is the significantly shorter time needed to charge the battery to full. There are no practical solutions for charging a battery with a high current or voltage in outdoor environments such as rain, dust, or snow. Therefore, all solutions that involve directly plugging in the battery have a low power range.

Thoughts? To be completely honest, the 'power bubble' looks like an MMORPG game.
