Morphing wing demonstrator! 👀

This “flexfoil” demonstrator by winglet specialist Aviation Partners Inc. and joint-venture partner FlexSys was displayed at the 2016 National Business Aviation Association show. The demo illustrates how the airfoil shape could change in flight to boost performance over a wide range of angles of attack, indicated airspeeds and Mach levels! 🤩

FlexFoil™ variable geometry control surfaces represent a major improvement over conventional aircraft flaps. By exploiting the natural elasticity of aviation-grade materials, the FlexFoil™ control surface changes the camber of a wing during flight by shape morphing rather than through the heavy and cumbersome mechanisms of conventional wing flap assemblies. Shape morphing performs the large controlled deformations (from -9° to + 40°) needed for landing and takeoff using a surface that is integral to the rest of the wing. FlexFoil also permits discrete span-wise twist of the compliant edge at high response rates (up to 30 degrees/sec.) to reduce induced drag and withstand external loads (air loads, inertial loads etc.), yet it is strong and stiff with very small distributed strains on the mechanical structures and control surfaces. 🕵🏻‍♀️

FlexSys variable geometry technology can be applied to both the trailing edge and leading edge control surfaces for rotorcraft to improve flow characteristics at high rates. The leading edge structure is made of Titanium and is capable of 10° LE droop once per rev. The trailing edge utilizes fiberglass for it's structure and is capable of up to 5 cycles per rev! 😎

Wind turbine blade shells assembly!

This timelapse shows one of the last and most complex steps when manufacturing a wind turbine blade! 🕵🏻‍♀️

As you can see, each blade shell is manufactured separately... and that means that eventually they have to be joined! 👀

The blade shell assembly happens by turning one of the molds 180º and placing it on top of the other mold! In this step, the two halves and the inner supporting structures are bonded together! 😳

It might look easy, but experts guarantee that's not the case! 😅

FlexSys, Inc's wing-morphing “flexfoil” demonstrator illustrates how the airfoil shape could change in flight to boost performance over a wide range of angles of attack, indicated airspeeds, and Mach levels. The scale model showed how wing morphing could provide integrated roll control, high lift, cruise optimization, load alleviation and even deicing functions! 👀

This new approach to variable-camber wings builds on a FlexSys-developed compliant composite structure that eliminates the mechanical complexity of previous shape-adaptive surfaces. The wing incorporates a one-piece, jointless mechanism that is strong and flexible, in which every section of the structure contributes equally to the shape-morphing while all components share the loads. Each section therefore sees only a small elastic strain with low stress, and the structure can undergo large deformations with high-fatigue life and low maintenance. 😎

Developed with funding from the U.S. Air Force, FlexFoil composites structures have demonstrated in testing by NASA to be capable of withstanding high dynamic pressures and aerodynamic loads up to 11,500 lb. per flap segment at high deflection angles. This testing also confirmed FlexSys projections for drag savings ranging from 2% for flap retrofits to 12% for all-new control surface designs. 👏
