Here's what most businesses get wrong

They focus on:
→ Random logo design
→ Generic color schemes
→ Template websites

But real branding is deeper:

1. Brand Strategy
Your foundation:
→ Purpose (Why you exist)
→ Vision (Where you're going)
→ Values (What you believe)

2. Brand Voice
How you speak:
→ Personality
→ Tone
→ Language style

3. Visual Identity
How you look:
→ Logo design
→ Color psychology
→ Typography
→ Image style

4. Brand Experience
How you deliver:
→ Customer service
→ Product Quality
→ User experience
→ Marketing Message

5. Brand Consistency
How you stay memorable:
→ Same voice everywhere
→ Cohesive visuals
→ Unified message

Branding is the process of creating a unique identity for a business, product, or individual. It includes elements like a logo, colors, messaging, and the overall experience that shapes how people perceive a brand. More than just visuals, branding is about building trust, recognition, and emotional connections with an audience.

In 2011, Coca-Cola was facing 10 years of declining sales.

They came up with an idea that marketing textbooks would advise against -- but was genius in practice.

This one stupid idea made them an estimated $2 billion...

Idea: Remove the most iconic logo with years of brand identity.

And replace it with the 150 most popular names in each country.

This one marketing campaign turned around Coca-Cola's 10-year slump.

-----

Insight 1 - Personalisation turns products into gifts

If it has your friend's name on it, you can't help but buy it for them.

And if you've been having a rough day, it makes the drink taste better when it has your name on it.

Insight 2 - The best ads don't look like ads.

Millions of people uploading Coca-Cola bottles with their names on them.

It doesn't look like an ad -- which is why it's such a great ad.

Lesson 3 - Avoid Traditional Advice

“The opposite of a good idea can also be a good idea“ - Rory Sutherland

They avoided the first rule of branding. They removed their logo.

But it worked.

We are now seeing people criticize Elon Musk for killing the Twitter logo.

The problem: If he took Twitter public tomorrow, it would struggle.

The solution: If he took X the Everything app public tomorrow, it 10x's the value overnight.

Reality shapes perception.

But perception also shapes reality.

Marketing is a humbling profession.

Sometimes the idea you’re certain is going to work doesn’t work. Or the idea you know definitely won’t work for some reason does work. Or the thing that used to work stops working. You need to continuously learn, re-learn, and un-learn.

Marketing is an investment, not an expense.

If you want short term results, invest in sales.

If you want long term results, invest in marketing.

Stop cutting your long term strategy because money is tight in the short term.

What comes first when designing ads: design or copy?

We've found ourselves in this debate several times.

Copy gives me as a designer an idea of what the ad is about. However, it will also impact the arrangement of text and overall layout.

Ultimately, it's a trick question: what should come first is the idea - and the best ideas always spring from collaboration.

Marketing tip: Don't give your customers too many choices.

It's distracting.

Your customers don't like to think too much.

So, it tanks your conversion rate.
