You can learn how to set effective boundaries in the workplace.

You actually need to.

You can’t control how people act but you can control how clearly you articulate your own boundaries. This applies to leaders just as much as it does to your colleagues.

Take charge of your work flow, take charge of how you're treated, set the standard for how easy and efficient it is to work with you.

The best, simplest and easiest way to do this is by:

Communicating

Communicate your expectations early on. Whether this is with a new client or at a new job. It’s important that you are completely transparent about your working and communication style.

This is not a nice to have. It's a must-do. This means communicating when you won’t be available to answer an email or call immediately. It also means stating clearly when deliverables can be expected and how many times you will update stakeholders.

When you set expectations early on, you ensure that all stakeholders are adequately briefed and prepared for what outcome they can expect out of this business relationship. Doing so ensures that no one is disappointed and you can easily exceed expectations

Trust me, clear communication will save you a lot of time and unnecessary disputes later on

If you ever want to establish boundaries, start with communicating first

You can learn something from every single person you meet

So take the time to really listen. Not to reply but to understand.

Fostering effective human connection is dependent on your ability to make others feel understood.

So create environments where this is the norm. Encourage open dialogue and transparency with the teams you create.

Here's how:

- Designate specific times or monthly meetings where it's an idea free fall, meaning that everyone is allowed to freely talk about what's important to them and what they think could be improved upon. Create a space of non-judgement. Anything said in the idea free fall goes and everything is a good idea until you can prove that it's not. Start with the assumption that all ideas are good. Jeff Bezos does this and it works for Amazon's teams

-Start with 360 degree feedback. Be open to receiving a much feedback on your leadership consistently, allow others to share how you can be better and then take this on. A great leader knows how to improve consistently and has developed a level of self-awareness to take a step back and marinate in what they could have done better

If you’re hesitating. Don’t. Here’s why you should go for that opportunity:

💪🏽Character: anything that challenges you is a great way to build character. You will have to rise to the occasion and in that process you become the best version of yourself, you’re stronger, more resilient and adaptable. It’s a big win

♥️Compassion: when you put yourself in different situations you become more aware of other circumstances and experiences, allowing you to have more compassion for both others and yourself

🙏🏽Clarity: you’ll never know if you don’t try. When you try new things, you become clear on what you enjoy, what you’re passionate about and what your skills are. This clarity is invaluable because it serves as the stepping stone for finding your purpose

You can’t expand if you’re too busy focusing on the status quo

You can’t build a great team if you refuse to see the greatness present in the most unexpected places

You can’t develop an effective talent strategy if you refuse to acknowledge that talented people don’t always look how you think they should

One of the biggest issues I’ve seen when it comes to the creator economy is that:

Most people don’t know what good looks like

They think they do but in reality they don’t

That’s because in a massively new field such a this

There is literally no how it’s done, just how you think it should be done.

Social media, no matter how much we attempt to quantify it, is still an enigma.

That doesn’t mean you can’t find the best people for it.

You can ensure that the best people will have:

-The track record
-The attitude
-The innovation

That you hire not based on years of experience but on the quality of that experience

That you look for factors such as personality and attitude in your decision-making

That you value integrity

That you find someone who lives and breathes social because let’s face it, you have to, if you want to be good

Take the first step and trust in your vision. Here’s how:

📞 Outreach: reach out to people in your network and beyond who are doing what you’d like to do, or are in an industry you’d like to break into. Ask great questions and learn. Success leaves clues so pick up on this and gain knowledge.

🤝 Collaborate: some of the most incredible businesses in history have been started though collaboration. Reach out to potential business partners. Chances are they’ll be able to help or support you on your journey and it could be the start of a wonderful mutually beneficial business relationship

💪🏽Dive in: you’ll learn best by throwing yourself in the deep end. This is one of the best ways to learn. Immerse yourself in what you need to get done. Make it a priority. You don’t have to know everything to start but you have to have courage.

You know what's one major thing you need to get over and face when you become a leader?

No one will tell you this
No one will say this out loud

But I will

It's your insecurities.

The worst leaders do the following:
-Put people down
-Blame others
-Are ungrateful

It's a toxic cycle that creates a toxic environment and starts from and with a person who has yet to deal with and overcome insecurities, and let me tell you this, insecurities are LOUD.

So here's what you're not going to do

You're not going to be that leader, the one who uses every chance possible to assert authority over others, who never utters the word thank you and who doesn't take responsibility

Instead you're going to do everything in your power to be a leader who:
-Uplifts others
-Takes responsibility
-Thanks people for their time and effort

and you're going to get to this place of abundant leadership by working on tackling your insecurities. There's enough shine to go around.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

That's it. That's the post.
