Earlier this month, we experienced the strongest solar storm to reach Earth in two decades—along with possibly one of the most brilliant and widespread light shows of auroras in 500 years.

This historic storm also granted invaluable data to our scientists. Learn how they will be studying this event for years: go.nasa.gov/3K2lhpn

On Dec. 17, 1903, humanity took to the skies, as Orville Wright completed the first successful powered flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft on the dunes near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

120 years later, we're continuing to push the boundaries of flight—on this world and beyond. NASA's Ingenuity helicopter has taken 67 flights from the surface of Mars, exploring Jezero Crater for signs of ancient life alongside NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover. Ingenuity's first flight ran for 39 seconds in an area that NASA named Wright Brothers Field... as it carried a piece of the original Wright Flyer.

For the first time, our #JunoMission has detected mineral salts and organic compounds on the surface of Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. The finding suggests an underground ocean brine is reaching the crust of the icy world. https://lnkd.in/gkMWkYAv
This week, our James Webb Space Telescope captured a cosmic ring, we reported on a star ripped apart by a black hole, and you get the chance to meet the mission team of our soon-to-launch Psyche mission.
We're ready! Our #NASAPeople are supporting events across the country ahead of today's total solar #eclipse. No matter where you are in the world, you can join in on the action from 1-4 pm ET during NASA's LIVE eclipse broadcast: http://go.nasa.gov/3PzERMz

More carbon than expected and an abundance of water were found in the 4.5-billion-year-old asteroid sample returned to Earth by #OSIRISREx. The two combined could mean that the building blocks for life on Earth might be locked in these rocks. https://lnkd.in/eppynyB9
April is a BIG month for sky gazing đŸ€©
Big planets: Jupiter will be visible all month; Mars and Saturn will rise together on April 10 & 11
Big eclipse: On April 8, catch the last total solar eclipse in the U.S. for 20 years
Big Moon: Catch a full Moon on April 23
Using NASA's first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system, we sent hundreds of pet pictures and videos to (and from) the International Space Station at a rate of 1.2 gigabits per second—faster than most home internet speeds.

One of the challenges that astronauts will face when living and working on the Moon is highly corrosive lunar dust that adheres to almost any surface. NASA's Johnson Space Center is evaluating whether a new filter, originally designed to capture liquid in air-flow systems, could also be used by lunar explorers.

The Particulate Contamination Prevention and Mitigation (PCPM) project has demonstrated that this slotted corkscrew design has the potential to yield a high-efficiency, high-capacity filtration system with low pressure drop. The design, which also shows promise in a terrestrial project to scrub gas released from incinerators, is currently being studied for its ability to capture lunar dust.

Scientists at NASA's Ames Research Center have leveraged machine learning and quantum computing to develop a model that can detect flight operation anomalies on aircraft, potentially avoiding serious future incidents.

In a recent project, the researchers developed a new model that uses deep learning; integrating this model with quantum computing can potentially improve and accelerate machine learning through the statistical sampling of energy-based distributions.

Reusable rockets have the potential to make spaceflight more reliable and cost-effective. NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) is working on a compact, fiber-optic health monitoring system that could help these vehicles fly more frequently.

The Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-based interrogation system uses a tunable laser with no moving parts and can be packaged inside the 6-inch diameter limit of a small reusable rocket. The device, which is approaching flight demonstration readiness, combines low size, weight, and power requirements with a high channel count, and could replace commercial, off-the-shelf WDM systems for reusable rocket health monitoring.

Watch the solar eclipse with us on Saturday, Oct. 14! Set a reminder to watch: https://lnkd.in/ehZKBrQS

What you can expect to see in person: https://lnkd.in/e8Jm_mnj

More eclipse coverage: https://lnkd.in/eKDr7M8R

Our “ring of fire“ show starts at 11:30 a.m. EDT (1530 UTC)—we'll watch the annular eclipse on live cameras from Oregon to Texas, with updates from NASA scientists, astronauts, and a few special guests. We'll also be taking your questions on social media!

Most skywatchers in North, Central, and South America will be able to see at least a partial solar eclipse; the eclipse will not be visible outside these areas. All eclipse-watchers will need to use specialized solar filters or an indirect viewing method (like a pinhole projector) to safely watch the eclipse.
