Pilot of Airbus A340 performs a perfect cross-wind landing. Crosswind landings can be a major challenge for pilots and occur when the wind is across the runway, not head-on. Typically aircraft land and take off into the wind to decrease the landing or take-off distance. In some cases aircraft land with a slight downwind component – typically associated with noise-sensitive airports where one runway is preferred over another. Where a pilot faces a crosswind landing they need to point the aircraft in the direction of the wind while maintaining a straight course toward the runway. This is called crabbing or yawing. In strong crosswinds, the pilot may also dip the wing – sideslip – into the direction of the wind. Just before touchdown pilots apply rudder to bring the plane – and its undercarriage – back so it is aligned straight down the centerline of the runway.

An ornithopter is a flying machine that mimics the flapping flight of birds by using wings that move up and down. Its name comes from the Greek words “ornis“ (bird) and “pteron“ (wing). The idea of building flying machines inspired by birds dates back centuries, with Leonardo da Vinci sketching designs for ornithopters in the Renaissance. However, successful manned ornithopter flights only became possible in the 20th century with the development of lightweight engines and materials. Compared to airplanes and helicopters, ornithopters generally have lower energy efficiency and payload capacity.

The UH-25B was an experimental helicopter escape system developed in the 1960s to provide a means of safely evacuating pilots and crew in the event of an emergency. The Helo-Jo system was an early attempt to improve helicopter crew safety by providing a last-resort escape option. While the concept was tested, it does not appear to have been widely adopted. Modern helicopters rely more on improved crashworthiness, flotation systems, and crew restraints to protect occupants in an accident. The video footage from 1966 shows the dramatic separation of the UH-25B cabin module from the CH-46 Sea Knight, demonstrating the parachute deployment that would lower the cabin to the ground in an emergency. It represents an interesting chapter in the history of helicopter safety systems.

The aircraft testing process often includes evaluating flutter, which is the aeroelastic phenomenon where the aircraft's wings start to vibrate and flap. In the case of the B2 stealth bomber, the wings appear to be almost flapping as the aircraft moves, which is quite remarkable to observe.

In 1984, NASA conducted a groundbreaking research experiment by deliberately crashing a Boeing 720 in the Mojave Desert. This Controlled Impact Demonstration was a joint project with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aimed at testing the effectiveness of an anti-misting fuel additive in a real jetliner crash scenario. The experiment not only focused on assessing the impact of fire after a crash but also shed light on the challenges of passenger survival in such situations, leading to the development of new safety regulations. The meticulously planned crash test involved over four years of preparation and utilized a remotely piloted Boeing 720, registration N833NA, which had served its useful life after accumulating over 20,000 flight hours and 54,000 cycles. The experiment was a pivotal moment in aviation safety research, demonstrating the commitment of NASA and the FAA to enhancing transport aircraft occupant crash survivability and advancing safety measures in the aviation industry.
