For those that don’t know, I started my commercial property career at the age of 16 (23 years ago 😮), straight off the back of failing my GCSE's. This was a conscious choice I made as I couldn't wait to get into the real world.
In the early part of my career, I used to do everything I could to avoid telling my clients how old I was, and I'd go to crazy extremes to keep this a secret. This was because I was providing advice that at times could impact the value of a property by millions of pounds and I used to ask myself “would I listen to a 22-year-old?“
It wasn't until I reached about 29 years old that I finally let go of this issue, and with the benefit of hindsight I wish I would have let go sooner, or not had this issue at all because I've learned....
IF YOU'RE GOOD ENOUGH, YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH
I feel this narrative I created for myself has part influenced our recruitment strategy at Compton and previously at Hatton Real Estate, where we pride ourselves on giving a younger generation opportunity and nurture this talent to maximise potential. This belief and commitment have proved to be one of our most successful initiatives and I firmly believe is one of the fundamental reasons behind our success.
Even though market conditions are challenging (see previous post) Compton remain committed to our growth and our vision. We will therefore be announcing two new exciting hires over the next few weeks, together with additional service lines being added to the Compton roster later this year.
So, my message to the younger me and all those younger agents out there who may be able to relate, don't forget: AGE IS JUST A NUMBER! If you understand your market, have put the work in and the advice you are providing is considered, measured and researched I promise you your age is irrelevant.
Believe in yourself and your clients will believe in you also.
