I’ve worked in HR for 20 years and every day there is something to learn.
While neurodiversity is nothing new, it has certainly had a rapid rise of awareness recently and left many HR professionals on a steep experience curve.
October is #ADHDAwarenessMonth and although I have a son with ADHD, I am acutely aware of how differently it shows up for boys and girls, for men and for women particularly if they have been masking it for years.
There are of course adjustments that can be introduced to support people at work such as:
🤲 Quieter working spaces to minimise distractions
🤲 Writing down instructions rather than giving them verbally (or both)
🤲 Setting reasonable deadlines for tasks
🤲 Scheduling or setting time aside for “interruptions” i.e. to deal with emails and phone calls
🤲 Introduce a Wellbeing Passport or Communication Profile which sets out preferences and adjustments in writing (- thank you to Nicola Little and Kirsty Goodyear for introducing a Higgs LLP version)
🤲 Supporting and offering training to managers
What else are businesses doing to ensure ADHD is properly suported?
Thoughts and ideas welcome.
