This is the hardest thing I've ever written on LinkedIn.

I was let go from my job earlier this year. The process of getting that job looked easy and like a dream. Everyone was high-fiving me when I got the gig.

It was my first leadership role in a long time.

Losing that job after only 7 months was embarrassing. That's why I didn't really tell anyone. I pretended I was still employed because the guilt of it was enormous.

I've never been let go before and it has been one of the toughest experiences I've ever gone through.

During this time, the one thing that kept me going is people.

- People introducing me to recruiters
- People inviting me to their tech events
- People sending me kind emails
- Former bosses spending the afternoon with me
- Mentors flying to Melbourne specially to catch up
- Free tickets to seminars that were an escape

I don't have all the answers and I fail too. But today I'm humble more than ever.

Thinking about the power of humanity and how it has helped me in this situation is the sort of idea that can bring tears to even the toughest persons eyes.

Don't let shame destroy you.

It's okay *not* to be always winning.
Harsh Reality: When you leave a job you think people will miss you.

You think they'll be calling you to check in.

Reality: People move on and forget you quickly.

That's the way it's supposed to be. Your ego tells you you're important. 
The truth is you are replaceable. Don't be sad. Move on. Look forward.

And the incredibly rare people who do check in with you?

They're friends for life. Hold on to those people for dear life.

Don't choose a company or culture. Focus your attention on the boss you will work with.

Your boss should:

• Give you opportunities
• Build you up
• Coach you
• Want you to win

If they don't then you'll end up with a monster like I did. A boss who doesn't care at all and wants to work you into the ground for their benefit until you burnout or quit. Or wants to micromanage you.

Be careful. Choose your boss more than a company.

Trust me, no boss is worth ruining your mental health for.
This is an extraordinary story of how one lady reframed her career and what it meant, to create a phenomenal customer experience that can't be forgotten.

You never know what battle someone is going through in their head and how you show up to work and treat people can sometimes be just what someones needs who is struggling.

Making people feel good through your work is an underrated trait. You don't see it on job ad. Recruiters don't question you about it. It's rarely talked about in job interviews.

It's crazy isn't it? The smallest things at work have the biggest impact.

Make your customers feel good after dealing with you.

This will put a huge smile on your face. When Sam was offered a position to work at Starbucks he told his parents that his life had meaning.

Sam was diagnosed with autism and with a movement disorder. Sam never thought he would be able to work behind the bar but his manager Chris believed in him.

His manager turned his movements into dance and now Sam is known as the dancing barista.

More people like Sam's manager need to start backing people and turning challenges into opportunities. What a clever way to inspire young Sam.

Most people get a degree, join the workforce, then stop learning

Successful people make after-hours learning a habit. They love to learn and push themselves.

When I first worked in banking, I found my job boring. One day my team leader during our 1-1 played some Ted Talks on his iPad.

He encouraged me to learn from others outside of banking. He gave me a list of books to read, events to attend, and people to follow.

Over the next 2 years I followed his advice. My career progression skyrocketed. Thanks to him I ended up attending a Tony Robbins event.

It rewired my brain. I was never the same again. It helped me heal from mental illness. Learning isn't a one-time activity.

Use self-learning to upgrade your career and increase your value.

Quit a company if there are no career growth opportunities.
Quit a company if the leaders are weak & unwilling to change.
Quit a company if the work is repetitive and boring. 
Quit a company if the culture is toxic.
Quit a company if upskilling is non-existent. 
Quit a company if internal hiring isn't common.
Quit a company if your aspirations outgrow managements. 
Quit a company if the learning and development platform is bad.

In this job market, you don't need to settle for a mediocre employer.

When you stay too long, you short-change your future self.

A 46 year-old HR person told me how to hire high-performers.

I disagreed with them.

They told me to look for the following:

- What school they went to
- What suburb they grew up in
- Whether they had worked at a brand name corporate
- How old they were (late 40's and beyond is too old)
- And what sport they supported (ideally golf)

I instantly felt disgusted after hearing this.

It went against everything I stood for.

My experience is that any kind of checklist filters out the good candidates.

You may have gone to a good school, but has that made you entitled?

You may have grown up wealthy, but has that made you arrogant?

You may play golf, but does that even matter?

Here's what I look for:

- Someone who can show empathy
- Someone who can overcome adversity
- Someone that is willing to put in the effort
- Someone who is *not* entitled
- Someone who has heart

Your race, religion, age, financial position, sporting interests or prior companies you worked at are of no interest.

Potential high-performers are everywhere.

Give people a go.

Ditch the checklist.

Well, I'm here to say it's not, sorry.

It's okay to start a family and not work.
It's okay to have outside hobbies (I love to write).
It's okay to start a business and have it go bankrupt.
It's okay to have career dreams that are ridiculous to some.

It's okay to try your best and miss your sales target.
It's okay to shed a tear when you say goodbye to your team.
It's okay to be yourself.

Business is confusing.

Most people play status games, get everything they think they want, and end up realizing they did it all wrong.

A fancy job title won't make you happy.
A bigger paycheck won't make you happy.
A big tech employer won't make you happy.

Happiness comes from being a contrarian by NOT playing silly business games.

Play a different game and be yourself. Focus on what matters. Focus on what will make you proud at the end of your life.

Focus on fewer regrets and more risks.

We need to stop pretending the salary isn't part of a career decision

And hiding it like it's forbidden.

The pay at a job matters.

Let's not be shy about.

• The more pay the faster you can pay off your mortgage.

• The more pay the better you can reinvest in yourself.

• The more pay the more holidays you can take.

• The more pay the earlier you can retire.

• The more pay the faster you can save money to start a business.

Let's stop pretending money doesn't matter.

It does.

Choose a leader instead of a job.

The wrong leader can hold you back for years.

The right leader can see your potential and help you get a promotion. I accidentally got stuck working for leaders who wanted me on the front line.

They loved what I could do for them and how I could make them look good in sales meetings. But they selfishly didn't want me to be a leader.

Best decision I made was to quit and work for a leader who saw my potential and wanted to nurture it.

Don't be fooled by nice words and “one day.“

Choose leaders who want to see you grow today. It'll get you pay rises and a bigger salary much faster.

If you can't trust workers to work from home, you can't trust them to work from an office.

Because you can't watch them 24/7.

If you try to micromanage and watch them 24/7, you'll waste precious resources and likely cause people to resign.

In my last job they forced us back to the office. I responded by quitting. Zoom calls can be done from any location.

Needing people to go to an office is what needy, insecure leaders require to make themselves feel good.

We could solve most traffic problems in cities by letting more people work from home. It's time to be smarter.

Say no to working in an office.

Overthinking is an epidemic.

It causes us to self-reject good career opportunities.

I found in my career that people with less intelligence than me made more money than me because they didn't overthink every decision like I did.

Imposter syndrome held me back.

It told me I couldn't be a leader or manage a team. So I didn't. I said no to promotions. I didn't apply for new jobs at other employers.

Now I have regrets.

Don't do what I did. Quit overthinking. The worst thing that can happen isn't that bad. Most decisions are reversible.

The life you want is built after hours.

Otherwise there's no time to do it, and you remain stuck in a less than ideal career experiencing an endless plateau.

You must make time to build.

The best thing you can build is a small audience online using social media. It becomes the engine for a new career, solopreneurship & even a business with employees. It's never been easier.

When I worked in banking I spent the first 2 hours of every morning writing on this platform. It was a tiny habit. After 5 years it turned into a movement.

That's the power of the internet and the leverage it creates. Spend the first 2 hours of the day building a tiny online empire.

Age 30-50

The age bracket where you no longer put up with toxic behaviour at work anymore and simply switch jobs.

Switching jobs is a silent protest.
Does the time you start and finish work matter?

It used to but times have changed. A large percentage of the workforce now spend part or all of their week working from home.

As long as the work gets done then how long you spend in the office is irrelevant. We're paid for results, not time spent.

The story of a hero and his views on leadership. This video is both incredibly inspiring and entertaining.

1st lesson: Your job as a leader is not to believe in someone, it's to get your team to believe in themselves.

2nd lesson: Responsibility isn’t in your job description. The question you should ask is this:

Given my abilities, what will be my response?

If you have the ability then all you need to concetrate on is how you will respond to a request with your abilities. I think that not using your abilities to do the right thing is a waste of an opportunity.

Opportunities to stand up like Richard Pimentel did when he was surrounded and likely to die in war are a choice.

Not every decision is as life threatening as that obviously. With that said, leadership is a conscious decision.

Most of what it takes to be a leader is a decision to do so when the odds are stacked against you.

So next time you have the chance, will you stand up and lead?
He was at work and saw a woman that was homeless, pregnant and sleeping on the sidewalk.

It was almost impossible to believe. He could of kept walking and he didn't. The kindness this officer shows in this video is so inspiring.

What's even more inspirational is that when he reached out on social media for help, people flooded his posts with offers to help.

It's not a dog eat dog world.
There is kindness all around us.
People are good by there very nature.

If you can help someone at work, then do so.

“Why can't we find good people to hire?“

- You read a resume instead of meet a human.
- You look for experience instead of potential.
- You judge those who left the workforce to be parents.
- You think entrepreneurship makes a candidate a threat.
- You take career gaps seriously.
- Your company's reputation was ruined by how you handled covid.

Good people to hire are everywhere.

All you have to do is remove your bias,
and look for imperfect humans,
who can do an amazing job if you give them a chance.

If you're answering emails at 12am, I'm *not* proud of you.

There's no award for the office hero that can send an email late at night to show they value their job and are always available.

Being available at all hours doesn't allow your mind to switch off. Therefore the work-related ideas you come up with will be useless and lacking creativity.

During this crisis, the people to respect are the leaders finishing at a reasonable time so they can get to their families and help them make sense of this crazy situation.

Clock off and be present.

Wisdom comes from the fear of failure...

When you put everything on the line, the lessons you learn are far more valuable. If all you do is succeed and get what you want, it's pretty boring.

Your mind craves growth and that's what's addictive - hence the reason we have a large self-improvement industry.

I've had to fail multiple times in my career and I'm grateful for it.

Fear of failure gives you the motivation to push through the struggles and achieve that big goal that everybody says is not possible.

Are you afraid of failure? I hope so...it's exactly what you need.

I don't leverage LinkedIn properly.

No hashtags.
No beautifully well-lit videos with captions.
No social media hacks.
No hourly picture quotes.
Hardly any tagging of people.

All that I do is write words (mostly), share stories and try to inspire a few people who may be having a rough day.

Social media doesn't need to be complicated. You don't need more advice, more hacks, or the latest trends.

Plain old words, written with humility, a touch of inspiration, and good old fashion storytelling is enough.

Be yourself without the noise.
So, you have $86,400 in your account and someone stole $10 from you. Would you be upset and throw all of the $86,390 away in the hope of getting back at the person that took your $10?

Or move on and live? Right, move on and live.

See we have 86,400 seconds in every day so don't let someone's negative 10 seconds ruin the rest of the 86,390.

Don't sweat the small stuff, life is bigger than that.

Not taking risks seems like the best way to have job security.

The opposite is true.

Without risks all you have is people-pleasing in disguise. That's how you miss out on promotions and leadership opportunities.

Non-risk takers are ignored.

That leads to a career plateau and possibly even regrets. Growth lies in discomfort and risk-taking.

Instead of taking dumb risks based on hope and luck, take calculated risks and protect your downside.

I decided to quit banking and start a business. I made sure I had several job offers in place in case it didn't work out. Thankfully, the risk paid off.

The strange truth is you can always get another job again. So even if a risk doesn't pay off the worse case isn't that bad.

• Take a chance on yourself
• Take more calculated risks
• Embrace job hopping
• Dare to start a business
• Put your hand up for leadership opportunities

Networking is how you get the real opportunities.

And it saves you asking for permission.

I used to attend startup events after work. I had no agenda. I just went to meet people and find out what they were working on.

When I lost my job two of the startup founders I met from those days offered me gigs. I didn't end up needing the offers but I was so grateful to get them.

Then years later I ended up working with one of those startups. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

But this opportunity didn't come via a job ad or through an application process. It came from my network as an inbound opportunity.

This is the beauty of non-needy networking.

Everything in your career gets easier. And you meet people who end up becoming friends.

Network after work.

I have been far too late at most things in life:

I still don't own a home.
I am not a millionaire in my 30s.
I didn't get married in my 20s.
I haven't got two kids like my friends who are the same age.
I am not the head of some huge corporate division.
I didn't understand social media until 2 years ago.
I still don't have a fancy job title.
I still can't get on a stage without feeling nervous.
I still don't have a fancy degree (unless you count sound engineering).

Then I realized that we are all at different levels in each area of life.

You could be at expert level in your career, and beginner level in your home life. You could be an amazing leader and a crappy dad. You could be a great musician and a terrible writer.

That's why when a person talks about a huge success in their career, I instantly think “what had to suffer in another area of their life?“

There is no right time to do anything.
Life is not a competition where there are winners and losers.

The right time to do something is when it makes sense for you.

Take it easy and don't be so hard on yourself. You're doing fine. Slow down and enjoy your career.

Are you taking advantages of opportunities in your career?

Opportunities often come disguised as setbacks, underwhelming offers, an ask for help, a secondment, a business idea or even a side project.

Recognising an opportunity is about having a sense of curiosity to explore them. It's about not having all the answers.

And when you get an opportunity, you must maximize it because you may be waiting a long time for the next one.

There may not be any obvious plan in place and that's okay. Work really hard and you will find the drive you need.

Don't let fear hold you back from taking an opportunity either. It's your choice and you're doing the best you can.

A failed opportunity often leads to an even better one with the right attitude.
