DON'T LET SALARY FEARS KEEP YOU STUCK IN A #TOXIC JOB

Years ago I worked in a toxic environment. The insecurity-driven behaviours of the leadership team created so much misery, employees were leaving in droves.

But I stayed. Partially because I didn’t want to be a “quitter”. But also because I didn’t want to go through the pain of trying to find another job. And I didn’t believe I’d find another job that paid what I was earning.

But when I started to have sleepless nights, #anxiety at the beginning of every work week, and long periods of time feeling depressed and stressed, I knew it was time for #change.

I found another job, with a great company. I took a 40% pay cut, downsized my apartment and made some other sacrifices in tow. But I got my #health and #happiness back and that to me was PRICELESS.

🔎 You know what else?

✅ Because I was happier, I performed better. After successfully restructuring and re-forming an effective admin department, I received one month’s salary in recognition/reward for my efforts, after 6 months in my new #job.

✅ After 12 months, I got promoted and DOUBLED my salary - earning more than I was in the job I had before.

✅ I got another month's salary reward 6 months after that for delivering a project above expectations

✅ I had the best colleagues and the best boss a person could ever ask for - one of the biggest bonuses of all.

❗️ I know people who've had complete nervous breakdowns after staying in a toxic environment for too long. They stayed because of their fears around money. They ended up earning NO MONEY AT ALL for 3 YEARS, under psychotherapeutic and medical supervision trying to build themselves up again. Many with kids to look after and provide for.

Please - don’t let your fears around money keep you stuck in a toxic job.

There ARE companies out there that will pay you what you’re worth AND treat you with respect. And if you have to take a pay cut initially, have faith that it's a short-term, temporary sacrifice and you will earn the money you want again. Because you'll be happier and performing at your best.

What you want IS out there. You just need to believe you're worthy and capable of finding it.

Instead of asking, “What if I don’t find a job that pays the same?”

Ask, “What will it cost me if I stay?”

HOW EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT ARE YOU?

Many of us live on autopilot. Unaware of what emotions we experience day-to-day. Or how fundamentally they impact our lives.

To refresh:

Our emotions drive the quality of the decisions and actions we take. How we communicate. These all then determine how people perceive us. Are we someone they want to help, hire, promote, love? Or someone they want to avoid?

In summary:

The quality of our emotions drives the quality of our relationships. Which determine how successful we are in #life.

#Emotionalintelligence is important in our #careers. Most employers look for it in leaders, potential hires etc.

But it's also important for US. Better emotional management = a better quality of life.

In case you missed it last week - we ran an EQ mini video series on our company page.

What is #EQ?

An understanding of our emotions, managing them, and understanding and managing other people's emotions.

How do we develop it?

Step 1 - IDENTIFY YOUR EMOTIONS.

We can't manage what we don't measure.

Note in a journal throughout the day:

✅ What emotions are you experiencing?

✅ What triggers them?

✅ What thoughts are driving them?

Question: how aware are you of your emotions and the impact they’re having on your life and career?

📚 WHAT'S YOUR STORY FOR 2023 GOING TO BE?

“Create the life of wealth and abundance you always dreamed of.”

“Set big goals and make 2023 your best year yet!”

Messages I’ve seen flooding social media channels in recent weeks.

For some, they are inspiring. For others, they're anything but. Burnt out and exhausted from yet another challenging year, some people don’t want “best!”. They just want better.

For some, they just want rest.

💡 If setting goals and taking massive action in 2023 feels heavy, simply start by thinking about what you’d like to be different next year.

From that, pick ONE theme you’d like to focus on, as a base for what you’d like your 2023 story to be.

📚A story of prioritising your mental and physical health and getting support.

📚 A story of feeling grounded and connected to your life. Connected to loved ones and yourself.

📚 A story of letting go of an unhelpful habit or behaviour and finally feeling free.

📚 A story of having the courage to stand up for yourself; communicating your needs, values and boundaries at work and home. To walk away from the situations and relationships that aren't serving you, to create space for what you want instead.

📚 A story of learning how to silence your fears and believing in yourself more.

Then decide to be the hero of your story. The one who takes charge and finds ways to overcome so that you can keep moving forward in life.

That doesn’t mean doing it alone. Every hero has support from someone. A coach. A therapist. A mentor. Friends and loved ones. A support group or community. Finding the right tribe is critical for our success and happiness in life.

Identify what it is you need this year to heal, find inner peace, get unstuck, move and/or become the person you want to be.

Find the people who can help you. Let go of any resistance and allow them to give you the love and support you need.

Asking for help might be the first step you need to take in 2023. It might be uncomfortable but it could be the best step you EVER take.

Wishing you all a year of connection, growth, fulfilment and love.

GETTING BACK UP: BUILDING #RESILIENCE

“It's pathetic. I should be able to put my emotions to one side and get back up no matter what.”

I hear this a lot from my clients. As if resilience is having an internal drill sergeant with no time for emotions running the show. “Emotions are weak! Stop whining and get back up!“

The issue is, in shutting out some emotions, we shut out all. We might achieve our goal, but we don't enjoy the ride.

We FORCE it. The short-lived sense of achievement at the end often outweighed by the struggle to get there.

Resilience is bouncing back with compassion. Allowing ourselves to experience the good and the bad, in FLOW.

After falling, it's checking:

1) What hurts?

2) What love, compassion and forgiveness do we need to bring to heal it?

3) Is now the right time to get back up? Are there some valuable lessons that need to be learned before we do?

It's:

4) Appreciating falling down is essential for development and growth

5) Self-soothing/self-parenting/self-belief. Encouraging ourselves to get back up with kindness.

In the presence of ALL of our emotions, instead of shying away from failure, we embrace it.

And the taste of success is that much sweeter.

How do you get yourself back up again?

“Stop trying to 'fix' yourself; you're not broken! You are perfectly imperfect and powerful beyond measure.“

- Steve Maraboli

In my late 20s, someone I knew told me that at social events I came off as aloof; cold and unwilling to engage.

I was stunned. Because it wasn't that I wasn't willing to engage. Far from it. I wanted to engage and connect! But at that age, I was hugely insecure, especially around people I didn't know. And my fear of saying something stupid and being ridiculed told me it was best to keep my mouth closed and not say anything at all.

At the same time, I was working as a recruitment consultant. A job that didn't come naturally to me and I was distinctly average at.

When I looked at the successful recruiters in the office they were:

➡️ extroverted / charismatic
➡️ socially confident
➡️ quick-witted and hilariously funny
➡️ competitive
➡️ hungry
➡️ 'glass-half-full'

I developed a belief to be successful and happy, I HAD to be these things.

Problem: I wasn't these things. I was introverted. Reserved. Intelligent but not super quick-witted, hungry or competitive. #Life experiences had taught me it was safer to be risk-averse than optimistic, to avoid hurt and disappointment.

I thought until I “fixed” these things, I'd never achieve anything great. I'd never be lovable.

But what I've learnt is this:

You don't need the perfect #mindset to achieve your goals. It is still possible to create your dreams WITH negative thoughts, WITH insecurities, WITH self-doubt and other personal challenges.

Steve Jobs. Elon Musk. Oprah Winfrey. Jim Carrey.

ALL had their mental/emotional/behavioural/personal challenges.

ALL living proof you can be perfectly imperfect and still achieve your dreams.

You also DON'T need to be perfect to be loveable. You simply need to learn to love yourself as the beautifully imperfect human that you are. Your “imperfections“ are nothing but patterns you learned in order to survive. Don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.

If you really want to thrive in this world, get clear on your dream, know you're worthy of all the happiness and success in the world and go for it.

Thoughts?

If you're feeling stuck, coaching can help.
