Hardik Pandya is like a consultant in the Mumbai Indians Team -

1. Management got him from outside to improve the team's performance

2. He is being paid more than others, because of his success in other firms

3. Current team members are not happy that he has so much power. Some are convinced he knows nothing

Hope you make a killer deck and sort everything out, soon!

3 similarities between Starbucks and Dolly ki Tapri -

1. Despite their success, both the CEOs continue to work from their home town (California, Nagpur)

2. Bill Gates played a key role in their survival in the early days - when Starbucks had only 6 branches and Dolly had only 1 stall

3. Both do not know how to make coffee. Dolly sells tea and Starbucks sells sugar milk.

I just received a rejection mail from a top consulting firm, yesterday.

I had applied to it (through a dear friend) 8 months back. Finally they told me that my CV is not good enough for them.

It brought a chuckle to my face.

Every company looks at candidates in a unique way; and you cannot please them all. In your employment journey, you will be rejected by multiple companies multiple times. It does not even matter.

You just need 1 YES to change your life!

BCCI announces equal pay for men and women cricketers

Leaders on LinkedIn - We fully support equal pay for all. We endorse equality

Leaders in real life - Let's have different pay for different employees in the same band and save some money. Let's capitalise on the fact that he/she had a lower salary at the previous organization!

Equality is desired only when it's convenient.

I missed my CA convocation due to certain personal reasons

I missed my CFA convocation as it happened 2 weeks prior to CAT

I missed my IIM-K graduation thanks to covid-19 – it never happened, not even virtually!

So when I missed my LinkedIn graduation event because I was in another city and was working, I was totally disappointed!

Cut to 3 days later, my wife surprising me with a mini-celebration at home! These small gestures make it all worth the effort.

Thank you LICAP for the wonderful memories!

Signing off, LinkedIn Batch of 2022

P.S. Notice the attention to detail - the orange scarf in the background, dedicated to LinkedIn

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal says he wears the iconic red tee and delivers food orders once in 3 months. He has been doing so for 3 years now.

Kudos to him. Always good to have a second source of income!

Every CA has gone through this -

2–3 days after I became a chartered accountant, my parents sent a box of chocolates to some close relatives.

My cousin grandmom called me -

She - Congrats Akshay. You did it. So how much did you score?

Me - 52%

She *Shocked* - Thats it?

Me - Ma, the score doesnt matter. Passing is more important.

She - You remember your cousin, Rahul? He scored 85% in engineering.

Me - Nice Ma.

She - Ok beta. Congrats again. Bye.

Indians and our obsession with high scores!!

Consultants are known to be over-paid and not add enough value. But are consultants really helpful or are they just glorified deck-makers?

After 3.5 years in the industry, here is my view on why businesses need consultants -

1. Ability to implement good ideas – Most client employees have great ideas. The unfortunate part is – internally, there is always resistance to change. That is where consultants come in handy. They listen to the suggestions and help remove bottle-necks. Top management is more prone to listen to consultants than their own employees.

2. Expertise across industries – Most client employees are industry experts. Consultants on the other hand have exposure to multiple sectors. They help share those best practices and manage easy wins. You might be surprised that - What works in the garment industry might work in the food industry as well.

3. Ability to deep-dive – Most clients know the problem areas but are unable to deep-dive due to lack of resources and bandwidth. A third-party in-depth research can be pivotal in such cases. Consultants can look at these problems objectively, without any bias.

4. Ability to push things quickly – An external party makes it easier to push employees to put in more effort. Unlike internal stake-holders, consultants have clear timelines and ensure the work is done much quicker.

No wonder that consulting is an industry which keeps thriving irrespective of any externalities. What do you think about consultants? Let me know!

For the people who are saying that “Board marks are irrelevant“, please check out the Indian MBA admission criteria -

IIM-A - 20% weightage to 10th and 12th
IIM-C - 30% weightage to 10th and 12th
IIM-K - 40% weightage to 10th and 12th
IIM-I - 74% Weightage to 10th and 12th

Not only for admission purposes, even for placement shortlists, your board marks will be considered. As 50% of students have less than a year of experience, it becomes an important parameter.

A bad score does not mean the end of the world - but are they relevant? Very much!
