Five years ago, Siemens Energy became its own company – legally new, but built on a legacy that goes back more than a century.

Long before April 2020, our engineers were already electrifying cities, industries, and entire countries. The black-and-white photos you see below – snapshots from the early factories – are a reminder of just how far back this journey goes. At a time when electricity was still a marvel, they were already building the foundations of the energy systems we rely on today.

That same drive to energize society has never faded. Today, more than 100,000 of us – up from 90,000 just five years ago – are working across 90 countries to move that legacy forward. One-sixth of global electricity generation is based on our technology. That’s not just a statistic. It’s a sign of the responsibility we carry – and the difference we can make.

May 1 will also mark five years since I took on the role of CEO. It continues to be a very exciting journey and a privilege to be in this role. I've seen firsthand how our people – Team Purple – bring their passion and purpose to some of the most critical energy questions of our time.

Because energy demand isn’t just growing – it is transforming. The world needs resilient energy systems. And with all eyes on the future, we have the technology, the experience, and the people to build that transforming energy world.

To everyone at Siemens Energy and to our partners, customers, and investors, thank you for being part of this journey.

Thank you, Bill Gates and Robert Habeck, for visiting our hydrogen center in Berlin this week. Grateful that you could join the Energy Resilience Leadership Group’s discussion on moving energy projects from lab to large scale with a diverse group of climate tech entrepreneurs.

There are systemic challenges in getting cleantech solutions scaled up as it carries risk, requiring entrepreneurial courage. For instance, while thousands of hydrogen projects have been announced globally, the latest IEA data indicates that only 7% of planned renewable-based hydrogen capacity is projected to be operational by 2030. This is a real issue. Addressing it requires a business case and joint efforts from industrial players, policy-makers, and financial institutions. That is why discussion rounds like these, committed to action on de-risking and implementation, are so important.

Very glad that Anne-Laure de Chammard could showcase our electrolyzer factory unlocking hydrogen’s potential and thank you, Ann Mettler for guiding us all through the day.

Exciting first weeks at #SiemensEnergy. I am even more impressed by the excellent job the Siemens Energy Team is doing after my today’s visit in the gas turbine and switchgear plants in Berlin.

In the gas turbine factory, I had the chance to take a look at a brand new SGT5-9000HL gas turbine. The HL-class is a masterpiece of engineering able to provide efficient and reliable power to 800,000 households.

The colleagues in the switch gear factory demonstrated the performance of their blue gas-insulated switchgear 8VN1. This switchgear features an SF6-gas free design, which provides benefits for climate. Also impressing: the high-voltage air-insulated switchgear DTC 245.

Thanks for fascinating insights and an inspiring dialogue. I hope to be back soon and to continue the exchange.

This morning, we published our first-quarter financial figures, marking an overall solid start to the year.

The strong market environment gives us further confidence that our business areas, Gas Services, Grid Technologies, and Transformation of Industry will continue to develop favorably. At the same time, we are working hard on fixing our wind business. Increasing profitability quarter by quarter, solving the onshore quality issues, and ramping up offshore factories remain our absolute priorities. The issues in Siemens Gamesa can only be resolved step by step; this is what we are currently working on.

The Global Risk Report 2024 has once again made it unmistakably clear that the fight against climate change is the central task of our time. There is no alternative to a successful energy transition. To move the needle requires action. In that regard, it is positive that the German Government has recently reached an agreement on the power plant strategy. It is now important to clarify the required details to trigger the investment impulses in the short term and, in particular, pave the way to a hydrogen economy.

Earlier this week, I visited our facilities in Brazil and Mexico and met with many colleagues and important customers. As I toured our manufacturing sites in Jundiai, Santa Barbara, Queretaro and Guanajuato, I was deeply impressed by our people at Siemens Energy. With unparalleled passion, they are doing their part to make the energy transition in Latin America's two largest economies a success. Mexico wants to reduce its CO2 emissions by 30 percent by 2030. Brazil aims to halve its emissions by the same date. With our 5,000 people in the two countries, we are committed to helping achieve these goals and drive the energy transition forward.

Siemens Energy continues to lead and shape the energy transition to build a better, cleaner and more sustainable energy world. As our annual figures, released today, show we are making tremendous strides in our work to stabilize our company; increase profitability, and thus laying a foundation for sustainable growth.

We’re doing so, while setting the pace for decarbonization and leading by example through committing to be 100 percent carbon-neutral in our own operations by 2030.

And with an annual R&D spend of approximately €1 billion, we are leading the way towards a Net-Zero future. To this end, we will continue to scale up climate innovations, bringing affordable and clean energy to everyone – including people in low-income countries.

My sincere thanks go to our global #TeamPurple. Our more than 91,000 employees are dedicated to supporting our customers in their transition to sustainable energy, and to create a lasting impact in societies we’re operating in. That’s our mission.

I have just returned from Central Asia as part of a business delegation. Here, I had the pleasure to accompany German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and met with the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The many discussions I had made one thing clear: the energy transition in the five Central Asian states is in full swing. Here are my key takeaways:

➡️ Reduce emissions: Coal-fired power generation is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in the region. Renewables are already growing and natural gas helps to improve the air quality. Furthermore, green hydrogen will help decarbonize industries.

➡️ Develop grid infrastructure: An energy system that relies on diverse sources of electricity requires more and smarter grids. This will lead to a massive expansion and modernization of grid infrastructure in Central Asia.

➡️Tap into the local talent pool: Central Asian societies are young – targeted training can support the availability of skilled labor. As a result, the region can advance with trained technicians and engineers – a prerequisite for the success of the energy transition.

The political will is there to make the region's energy transition a success. And we at Siemens Energy are ready to provide active support with our expertise – for both technology and training. The energy transition in Central Asia is on the right track.

This week, I spent a few days with our Team Purple, government officials, and our customers in Dammam and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In line with the country's ambitious Vision 2030 goals, it is transforming fast in various sectors, particularly in the energy field. Aside from being a crucial player in the oil and gas market, it plans to generate 50 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and shift toward cleaner gas-burning for its energy production. A transition we are supporting through multiple projects, including solar PV, improving the electrical grid's structure, and developing highly efficient gas turbine technologies that could later be used for hydrogen.

In 2016, our Dammam factory produced the first-ever made-in-Saudi Arabia gas turbine. This facility has since undergone an incredible transformation, continuously expanding its portfolio and becoming our manufacturing hub in the region. Here, we are servicing the entire energy value chain under one roof and training young Saudis to co-develop resilient energy technologies for the future in collaboration with our customers. A vital step towards ensuring a resilient energy supply, which forms the foundation of all social development and, in turn, progress and prosperity for all.

Thank you to the entire team who joined us in person and virtually. It was a pleasure to spend time together with you during the holy month of Ramadan. To all our colleagues, customers, and partners celebrating: Ramadan Kareem.

Today we held our Annual Shareholders’ Meeting, where we provided an overview of the last fiscal year. The second half of 2023 was hard for Siemens Energy and all its shareholders, no doubt about it. The losses entailed by the problems in our wind business were a bitter pill to swallow. Especially as it overshadowed many successful energy projects that we carried out over the year.

However, it is my deep-felt conviction that we will successfully master this transformation. The many positive examples I have cited in my speech from today, which I will link below, strengthen this conviction. Our Gas Services, Grid Technologies and Transformation of Industry business areas are all excellent examples of successful transformation. This process was also painful at times. But it was worth it, and I am confident that we have the right team in place to accelerate our strategic path and deliver for our customers and partners day in and day out.

Yesterday, we published our second quarter results – the strongest since Siemens Energy was founded!

An achievement only possible because of the 100,000 people who make up #TeamPurple. As mentioned in our Global Town Hall yesterday, what you do every day for our customers – and for each other – truly makes the difference. A heartfelt thank you to everyone in our factories, at project sites, and in our offices.

Strong customer trust also stands behind these results. Order intake was higher than in any other quarter in our company’s history. In today’s uncertain geopolitical environment, our broad setup across technologies – and our ability to operate locally across multiple regions we proudly call home – gives us both stability and flexibility.

The world has already entered the age of electricity and we’re well positioned to support that growing demand with a strong portfolio and a team that delivers.
