₹19,725 crores & 7 lakh hours of loss due to traffic every year!
In a report directed to the Deputy Chief Minister, traffic experts have emphasized that Bengaluru experiences an annual financial loss of ₹19,725 crore due to traffic-related issues.
The IT sector's employment growth has propelled Bengaluru's population to 14.5 million, with nearly 1.5 crore vehicles.
Another study from ISEC reveals that the city loses around 7.07 lakh hours of productivity yearly due to traffic congestion.
Among commuters, 57% of private vehicle users and 55% of public transport users frequently arrive late at work. Public transport users tend to adapt better to congestion, while private vehicle users suffer more productivity loss, as per the report.
Despite having 60 fully operational flyovers, the study highlights that delays, congestion, signal disruptions, and vehicle interactions contribute to this substantial loss.
The report underscores the need for prompt traffic management and infrastructure enhancements to mitigate financial losses and elevate the overall quality of life for residents.
The traffic problems in Bengaluru must be dealt in a comprehensive way by ensuring a well-connected metro/public transport system and more use of public transport rather than private cars. If not acted quickly, these big financial losses will continue, and it could harm the city's economy and in turn India's economy.
