Since we started GUT, we said 27 “NOs” to potential clients.
For different reasons:
Low fee.
Not profitable.
Rude treatment.
Unfair pitch process.
Lack of creative ambition.
No chemistry after the chemistry meeting.
Saying “NO” is hard but it leads you to more meaningful “YESes.”

My decade:
2009: global tries to fire me
2010: here’s a bunch of lions
2011: shut up
2012: started David
2013: Ogilvy Brazil agency of the year
2014: moved to Miami
2015: got BK
2016: first SB spot
2017: best year ever but not happy
2018: started GUT
2019: omg why I took so long

Unprecedented. Anthological. Historical. Magical. Insane. Crazy. Wow.
These were some of the words used to describe this week.
We’re still processing everything.
It’s been overwhelming.
There are a lot of feelings and learnings to digest.
But first, I want to talk about my partner Gaston Bigio.
It took me 3 months to convince you to jump from our comfortable corporate to the unknown and the uncertainty of a new independent ad agency.
Once you did, you were all in.
Thanks for believing in my public, almost-unattainable dreams.
And for being grounded and realistic to make them happen.
Dream are nothing without execution.
Thanks for being so passionate and intense that people call you “gastorm.”
Thanks for being so human and emotional.
Thanks for “pancaking” when you realize someone else has a better idea.
Thanks for being who you are.
We couldn’t be more different, yet deep down we want the same.
And that’s why it works.
I’m bossa nova, you’re tango with a rose in your mouth.
I’m the Chief Cocktail Officer, you’re the Chief Worry Officer.
We laughed and cried many times this week.
We even had a little fight in front of clients on Friday.
Because we’re too passionate.
Because we care.
Because life is too short to do shitty advertising.
This week will change our careers and lives forever.

Yes, it’s true. Gaston Bigio and I are opening GUT São Paulo. It’s our third GUT office in less than a year. It’s insane, but necessary. There’s a lot of expectation about GUT São Paulo, especially from ourselves. Also, I was born and raised in Brazil. It’s my homeland. I think Brazil has some of the most talented people in the world. I’m sure we’ll find gutsy talent and gutsy clients to make GUT São Paulo one of the best agencies of Brazil and beyond. An indie shop that believes in intuition, courage, and transparency. For the first time I’ll have an agency 100% independent in Brazil. I’ll be able to do things my own way and to commit more mistakes faster. I couldn’t be happier.
