It was fantastic to get together for the first time with new colleagues from HSBC Bank Canada for our Global Town Hall in Toronto and Vancouver last week. As we look ahead, we’re focused on deepening our client relationships and continuing to build the bank of the future.

Many of our colleagues, clients and communities will be deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was an iconic woman of remarkable importance to millions across generations, and the true embodiment of duty and service.

Our thoughts are with her family at this time.
This morning, I will address RBC stakeholders at our Annual General Meeting. But before heading to the virtual stage, I shared the below message with our 86,000+ global employees, thanking them for their incredible contributions over the last 12 months and reiterating our commitment to their health and well-being.

It will still be some time before the full picture of the post-pandemic world – and the future of work – becomes clear. And with many regions across our communities reverting back into lockdown, continuing to encourage heathy work-life boundaries is a top priority for me.

Here’s my full note to employees outlining why this is important, and pledging our ongoing support to helping them manage pandemic fatigue.
I’ve coached and mentored many leaders in my career. One of the skills in leaders that I always look for is the ability to build followership. That means leaders who are curious, active learners, and whose ability to influence and inspire their colleagues and teams is a critical part of their success.

Call it what you’d like – followership, soft power, influence or the ability to think collectively – it’s a fundamental part of good leadership. Truly great leaders will inspire greatness in others, and bringing your team along with you on the journey will always set you apart.
It was wonderful to spend time with colleagues, clients and community partners in London last week. During my trip I heard about how our teams across Europe are delivering leading advice and support to clients in an evolving macro landscape.

A major theme in my discussions across our capital markets, asset and wealth management teams was our continuing goal to become more deeply integrated in this market. Across the region, we have a strong team leading our ambition to deepen client relationship and build new ones.

As we continue to grow the RBC story in Europe, we also talked about the importance of investing in the communities where we operate. I had the pleasure of visiting Great Ormond Street Hospital, our London RBC Race for the Kids charity partner, to see the positive impact our support is having. We’re proud to be a Founder Partner of the Children’s Cancer Centre – a £350 million fundraising campaign to build a new state-of-the-art building that provides care to children with the most complex and hardest-to-treat cancer.

To wrap up the visit, I saw “Just For One Day”, at The Old Vic, one of the 48 main stage productions supported by RBC as Principal Partner. I learned more about the impact we are making in the lives of youth through “Take the Lead”, the theatre’s flagship employability program.

Thank you to the team for hosting me, and I can’t wait to be back.
