A message to bosses everywhere: Don’t judge us on whether we come to after work drinks

🤗 Some people have caring responsibilities and would love to stay, but cannot
🤮 Some people frankly don't like work drinks. Sorry. It's not personal
😨 Some people don't feel safe at work drinks. (Maybe it IS personal.)
😴 Some people need to rest
😶 Some people have a reason that they don't want to talk about

All extremely legitimate reasons to skip work drinks. (and only the third one is a problem.)

Skipping work drinks says nothing about our team spirit, commitment, or ambition.

Judge us by our work.

Don’t be fooled
Disney films are deeeeep.

They may seem superficial on the surface, but that’s part of their magic.

Disney basically makes modern myths - teaching resilience, empathy, personal growth, and social responsibility, normalising values - just like ancient myths once did.

So they’re Trojan horses—delivering wisdom and ethical guidance under the guise of entertainment.

Some of history’s best thinkers have made their way into Disney films, even if their wise takes do end up voiced by, like, a crab. (Don’t judge the thinking by the drawing.)

So when you curl up with a Disney film, you're tapping a deep well of human wisdom.

PS Which is the best Disney film, and why is it Encanto?

6 BIG mistakes I made as a new manager
(so you don't have to make them too!)
Making this brought back painful memories -
But we all learn and grow.

If you're struggling with management, you're not alone.

I've led teams for over 20 years now.
Here's what I wish I'd known right away:

1. Don't radiate stress to your team
→ It doesn't help them do their jobs

2. Be direct with your requests, not vague
→ Get comfortable with being clear. You're allowed to!

3. Learn when to direct and when to give space
→ You need to be able to do both to get the best out of a team

4. Give your team context
→ So they can make good decisions as they do their jobs

5. ... But not TOO much context
→ It's easy to overwhelm people, especially at the start of a project/job

6. Celebrate wins
→ Don't wait for perfection -- help your team take the wins where you can

I'm grateful to all the team members who helped me learn these lessons... especially the very direct German one who told me #2!

If you can learn from my mistakes, you'll be well on your way.

What's been your experience?
