“Both options are grossly inadequate. Our whole way of life in developed countries must change. It must become far more localized. We need to reduce our consumption by about 90%. Many jobs will need to go in tourism, fashion, retailing, finance, advertising, industrial agriculture, manufacturing of non-essentials, much of the car industry, etc. Many new jobs will be created in sustainable agriculture, subdividing big houses, retrofitting insulation, improving health, education etc.
The effect of scaling down many industries will cause countless bankruptcies and massive loss of wealth. There is no longer time for a smooth transition.
The largest item isn't shown in the diagram, i.e. for people to realise how bad the situation is and how big the changes needed are. The rosy view of Degrowth is good for marketing / storytelling and in theory could be true, but the transition will very difficult to say the least. There is no guarantee that the transition won't turn into collapse (which would be worse without a planned transition to Degrowth).”
