PhD Students - 10 simple ways to 10x your PhD productivity.

๐Ÿ. Social media is not controllable. As we scroll, we see content irrespective of whether or not we really want to see it. Some of the content deeply impacts us such as a horrible incident or something bad happened to a loved one. If it happens, you might not be productive for the rest of the day. So, better avoid it in the first half.

๐Ÿ. Our mind does not work to its maximum potential all the time. However, it does work in a focused way for 3-4 hours. Make sure to work with full focus for at least 4 hours a day. Get yourself disconnected from mobile phones, emails, etc, and work on the most challenging task. It shouldn't be 4 consecutive hours, though.

๐Ÿ‘. Not all PhD tasks require equal focus. For example, replying to some emails, marking student submissions, and voluntary tasks for a conference do not require too much mental focus. Work on them at times when you are not too productive.

๐Ÿ’. Procrastinating PhD tasks is quite common. Don't procrastinate. Follow the 5-second rule. If you don't jump towards the task in the first 5 sec, your brain starts pushing you away from it. Everything is difficult before you do it, just do it.

๐Ÿ“. It helps especially during paper writing. Some students follow this technique and have shown good results. Set a timer to 25 mins and solely focus on writing during these 25 mins. Once the timer hits, take a 5 min break and come back again.

๐Ÿ”. As a PhD student, you should be eager for ideas. These ideas you can take from many places - meetings, conferences, and your own thoughts. Don't let them fly away. You can easily take notes even on your mobile phone. Take notes and reflect on them later.

๐Ÿ•. Replying to an email, passing your paper through Grammarly, and sending a group meeting agenda are shorter tasks. These tasks take 5-10 min. However, when you are on the way back ending your day, you will feel like you have done several tasks - a feeling of accomplishment for the day.

๐Ÿ–. Some activities, people, and content around you can be toxic. A 5-sec toxic engagement can ruin your day. It can demotivate you and keeps you unproductive for the whole day. Identify these and keep yourself away.

๐Ÿ—. Being worried is something not unusual for PhD students. However, being worried doesn't solve any problems but the right actions do. For the right actions, you first need to get yourself out of the worry bubble. Taking PhD worries out of your head will double your productivity.

PhD studentsย โ€” How to get the best supervision for your PhD?

Supervisor-supervisee relationship in a PhD is very important. Here are 10 things you can do on your part to get the best out of your PhD supervisors.

๐Ÿ. Instead of telling your supervisor what you have worked on, show him/her the progress. For example, instead of saying that I have read 5 papers, you should say here are the critical summaries and 5 takeaways from these 5 papers that I think are useful for my research in these ways.

๐Ÿ. If your supervisor criticizes you, actually he/she is not criticizing you but your work. This criticism is only for the purpose of improving your research and helping you to succeed.

๐Ÿ‘. Send upfront the points about which you want to talk about in the meeting. Similarly, share what has been discussed in the meeting. It will only take around 10 minutes of your time.

๐Ÿ’. ๐€๐ฌ๐ค, ๐๐จ๐ง'๐ญ ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ž: Do not assume outcomes from your supervisors. Instead, ask in a polite way. For example, do not assume that your supervisors will not allow you to apply for a research internship. Ask them.

๐Ÿ“. Your PhD is your project. After around 6 months, you are likely more expert on the topic than your supervisors. They are there to guide you through the process.

๐Ÿ”. Supervisors have many things on their plates. It's possible that their minds skip something. Give them a software reminder if they need to get back to you on something such as feedback on a paper.

๐Ÿ•. Sending a paper draft to a supervisor one day before a submission deadline is a mistake on your end. Even if he/she provides the feedback, it might be shallow. Give them time.

๐Ÿ–. Communicate clearly to your supervisors about any obstacles you are facing and any expectations you have. They have the experience to guide you accordingly but first, they need to know.

๐Ÿ—. If your supervisors have corrected you about something, try not to repeat it. It will give them the impression that you did not value their feedback. If you don't agree, discuss it with them.

๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ. Doesn't matter how good or bad your relationship is with your supervisor, always respect them. I have hardly seen anyone successful who does not respect his/her teachers and supervisors.
