There is a lot of noice around the popularity or electric cars around the world. Most of the data is whether incorrect or imprecise as it usually includes the volumes of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and extended range (EREV).

This chart shows the exact market share of the BEVs only (battery electric vehicles or pure electric cars), excluding any other kind of EVs. It gives a better view of how the real zero-emission vehicles are performing around the world.

Norway continues to be the paradise for the BEVs making up 98% of this Nordic European country’s new car registrations during the first three months of this year. It was followed by Hong Kong that still reports its sales separate from mainland China.

Notice the key position of other non-European markets like Singapore (flooded by the Chinese models), and Vietnam (almost monopolized by the local Vinfast). Uruguay also has an important position, beating other big BEV markets like China or France.

The world’s (66 markets) average was at 14.3%, just between Turkey (boosted by the local Togg) and Colombia (boosted by the arrival of Tesla).

On the other hand, markets like the US, India, and Japan, disappoint due the low penetration of these cars. In the case of USA, the changing conditions around BEV incentives and the increasing popularity of HEVs affected even more the adoption of BEVs. In India, the growth has been affected by the lack of Chinese models. And in Japan, there is a preference for hybrid cars following the dominance of Toyota.

How is the situation in your country?

The European new car market looks interesting when analyzing its registrations by brand origin. This way of classification does not consider the product origin or where it is built but where each brand is coming from.

MG is the exception. It has a British heritage as it was founded there more than 100 years ago. However, after it died in 2005, it was resurrected by the Chinese makers with products fully conceived, developed, and produced in China.

Germany and France still buy German and French car brands, respectively. It is not the case in Britain and Italy, where its local brands are outsold by the German and Chinese ones.

In fact, the UK was the market with the highest market share for the Chinese car brands among the big 5. In contrast, their share in Germany is still very low.

Notice the solid position of both the Japanese and Korean brands almost everywhere in Europe. On the other hand, the Italian and British brands are barely seen outside their home markets.
