🚀Throwback To When Meta’s AI Chief Demonstrated The First Text-recognition CNN

Before PyTorch, before GPUs ruled AI, there was LeNet-1.

In 1989, Meta AI chief Yann LeCun and the Bell Labs crew built the first CNN that could recognize handwritten digits—with real-time speed and surprising accuracy.

Running on a DSP32C chip inside a clunky 486 PC, LeNet-1 used two layers of 5x5 convolution (stride 2) and two fully connected layers.

Some numbers for the nerds:
✔️9,760 parameters
✔️64,660 connections
✔️12.5 million MACs/sec on that DSP card

And the best part? This tech quickly leapt into the real world. By the late 90s, ATMs across Europe and the US were reading handwritten check amounts—powered by this tiny ConvNet.

LeNet-1 wasn’t just a research project. It seeded the evolution of Torch7 → PyTorch and helped reshape AI’s future.

DALL-E 3 just CHANGED THE GAME!

OpenAI has introduced the third version of its generative AI visual art platform, DALL-E, which offers enhanced context understanding and improved safety features.

DALL-E 3 now integrates with ChatGPT, allowing users to generate prompts with the help of ChatGPT instead of crafting detailed prompts themselves.

ChatGPT can provide paragraph-length prompts for DALL-E to follow.

The integration with ChatGPT simplifies the art creation process, making it accessible to a wider audience without requiring strong prompt-writing skills.

DALL-E, initially released in January 2021, predates similar text-to-image generative AI art platforms like Stability AI and Midjourney.

OpenAI faced criticism over DALL-E's potential to generate explicit or biased images, leading to a waitlist for access to the platform. The waitlist was later removed in September of the previous year.

DALL-E 3 will be initially available to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise users in October, followed by research labs and its API service in the fall. The release to the general public was not specified.

OpenAI has implemented safety measures in DALL-E 3 to prevent the generation of explicit or hateful images. These measures include input classifiers to ignore certain words and restrictions on creating images of public figures.

Artists can request the removal of their artwork from future versions of text-to-image AI models to prevent potential copyright issues and lawsuits.

OpenAI's ongoing commitment to improving safety and addressing potential misuse of AI art generation was highlighted, although the model is not considered perfect.

Unlike DALL-E 2, DALL-E 3 does not attempt to mimic the art style of living artists, further mitigating copyright concerns.

OpenAI just rolled out some much-requested upgrades to #ChatGPT

1. Prompt examples: A blank page can be intimidating. At the beginning of a new chat, you’ll now see examples to help you get started.
2. Suggested replies: Go deeper with a click. ChatGPT now suggests relevant ways to continue your conversation.
3. GPT-4 by default, finally: When starting a new chat as a Plus user, ChatGPT will remember your previously selected model — no more defaulting back to GPT-3.5.
4. Upload multiple files: You can now ask ChatGPT to analyze data and generate insights across multiple files. This is available with the Code Interpreter beta for all Plus users.
5. Stay logged in: You’ll no longer be logged out every 2 weeks! When you do need to log in, you’ll be greeted with a much more welcoming page.
6. Keyboard shortcuts: Work faster with shortcuts, like ⌘ (Ctrl) + Shift + ; to copy last code block. Try ⌘ (Ctrl) + / to see the complete list.

Teachers should be wary of AI detection tools for five reasons:
1) They aren't very good. For example, OpenAI's detector only identifies GPT output 26% of the time. (Also, never ask ChatGPT if something was created by ChatGPT - it will make up an answer, it doesn't know)
2) All the current tools were made for GPT-3.5 or earlier, not the newer GPT-4 models, which are much more capable
3) Even small changes to the text (including asking the AI to revise its own text) can break detectors. I actually had students in my class “cheat“ on an assignment, and those who did any iteration at all fooled detectors.
4) There often are false positives. Even the OpenAI tool has a 9% false positive rate.
