I find it strange that we spend money on trainers for our bodies and coaches for our jobs, but not counselors for our relationships. My wife and I do couples therapy bi-monthly and it’s super helpful. We don’t do it because we are having issues, which of course every relationship has, but we do it to uncover new issues before they happen. Too few share the work required for successful relationships.
As someone who never did therapy, my wife pushed us to do couples therapy when we got engaged to prepare for marriage. We kept our counselor once we got married because why not spend money and time on the most important thing in our lives, each other.
Something I’ve realized while building Harlem Capital is that my wife has been ESSENTIAL to its success. She covered my rent while I was at Harvard Business School so I could fundraise. She put me on her health insurance until HCP got some. And she gives me ideas weekly during our conversations.
Your partner can accelerate your growth personally and professionally so put in the effort and money to develop and challenge each other.
