How do you include and value introverts at work? Here's one way.

Don't assume everyone speaks to think.

Recognize some think to speak.

And not everyone wants to share ideas verbally. Some might prefer to share them via ping, slack, or email.

Example:

❌ Ask during the meeting, “Who wants to volunteer to lead our 2023 strategy? Please raise your hand.“

✅ Say during the meeting, “We need a volunteer to lead our 2023 strategy. Please take this week to consider if you are interested and email me by Friday.“

The second way includes diverse communication styles and preferences!

Camille Barrio, you reminded me about speaking vs thinking in #google's neurodiversity fireside just now. Thank also to Jim Hogan, Michelle (Simms) Bandler, Douglas Paredes, and Skye Giordano for the meaningful session.

And thanks Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy for this great image.

Let’s be honest: Success isn’t just about hard work.

If it were, your most capable colleague would be running the place.

But what actually moves your career forward?

✔ Politics
✔ Saying no
✔ Self-promotion
✔ Whether your boss sees your value

We’re taught that hard work speaks for itself.

It doesn’t. And it’s the biggest lie we’re told in our careers.

People are busy.

And brains are wired to notice what’s wrong—not what’s quietly going right.

Here’s a great way to show your hard work:

Every Monday, send your manager a 3-line email:

→ What you accomplished last week
→ What you're tackling this week
→ One thing you’re proud of

It takes 10 minutes. And it changes everything.

Because what matters isn’t just what you do...

It’s what your boss *thinks* you do.

So start by giving yourself credit.

Then help others see it too.
