Have you heard the buzz about AI personal therapists? If not, I’m here to enlighten you.

Picture this: you're sitting in your chair, pouring out your deepest concerns and emotions to your therapist. But instead of a human with thoughts, feelings, and hangups of their own, your confidant is… an AI?! 🤖 Talk about spilling your heart out to a non-judgmental, unbiassed entity who won't be tempted to steal your snacks from the waiting room!

Except wait – they are biassed. And of course, so are we – and that’s what makes the prospect of opening your soul to robots a a double-edged sword ⚔️

Let’s start with the pro’s:

💚 Safety: Sometimes, opening up to another human can feel intimidating. But with AI personal therapists, there's a sense of comfort and safety in baring your soul. No raised eyebrows or awkward silences—just a listening ear, devoid of judgement or bias.

💚 Accessibility: Life gets busy, and prioritising mental health can be a challenge. But AI personal therapists up the accessibility factor. Verbal processing of emotions becomes as easy as ordering a pizza or streaming your favourite show. Convenient, right?

But it brings challenges. Like:

❌ The human connection: Ah, the magical ingredient of therapy—the human connection. The knowing nods, the empathetic “mmm-hmm,“ and the gentle mirroring. AI, as smart as it is, might struggle to recreate that level of connection. After all, it's hard to teach an algorithm the intricacies of a soulful nod.

❌ Emotional complexity: Emotions are like abstract art—vibrant, messy, and often not logical. But can AI algorithms capture the nuances and irrationality of human emotions? It's like asking a calculator to appreciate a Picasso. Not an easy task.

❌ Ethical implications: Here’s the thing: teaching AI about the depths of our emotional experiences opens a Pandora's box of ethical concerns. We don't want AI manipulating us or using our vulnerabilities against us – so we shouldn’t hand over our hearts to technology without thinking carefully and creating safeguards.

How do we strike this tough balance?

As we navigate this brave new world of AI personal therapists, let's remember the bigger picture. Weigh the benefits against the risks. Embrace some of the accessibility and benefits AI offers, but also cherish and protect the human connection that can't be replicated by lines of code.

Of course, I’m not your therapist. And by all means, spill your heart to an AI if it helps. But if you want to share your story with another human who understands – or will die trying – you know where to find me 😉

Think mental fitness is a ‘nice to have’ whose benefits may not be tangible? This is a wake-up call for every organisation: your people’s inner game is essential to your success.

Every year, poor mental health takes a heavy toll on the world's economy: a loss of $130 per person that totals $1 trillion. 💔 We’re already paying the price for neglecting mental health in the workplace.

But let's look closer at the cost of doing nothing about mental fitness within our organisations. The Lancet estimates that 12B workdays are lost to depression and anxiety alone each year – the equivalent of taking the whole UK workforce out of production for a year 📉

So, what are the key contributors to this loss? Let's outline them:

1️⃣ Absenteeism: Employees who are struggling with mental health issues take more sick days or time off, leading to lost productivity. This disrupts workflows, strains teams, and increases workloads for remaining employees.

2️⃣ Presenteeism: Even when employees show up for work, poor mental health can severely impact their performance. They may be physically present, but mentally and emotionally disengaged, decreasing productivity and work quality.

3️⃣ Leaveism: People may feel overwhelmed or burnt out, but unable to take time off. So they use vacation or personal days for work-related tasks while officially on leave – and this further harms their mental health and productivity.

4️⃣ Labour turnover: Poor mental health can significantly increase employee turnover rates. The costs of recruiting, onboarding, and training new employees to fill these gaps are substantial and can directly impact organisational success and financial stability.

So, ignoring mental health can not only cause businesses to suffer financially, but also to lose valuable talent. It can undermine team dynamics and hinder overall success.

And beyond the cost of poor mental health, there’s also the BENEFIT of strengthening our mental fitness: people who are at the top of their game and can lead companies to success.

It’s clear: we HAVE to recognise the value of mental fitness and prioritise it. It’s a strategic imperative for sustainable business growth.

One company that saw the need for and value of mental fitness, resilience and team effectiveness training early on is Unilever. We’re grateful to have partnered with them on this at Symbia.

If we REALLY want Mental Health Awareness to mean something, we have to walk the talk.

Let's invest in the inner game of our teams and leaders – and set ourselves up for success by prioritising the mental fitness and holistic well-being of our greatest asset—our people.
