“After 24 years in the military, I’m looking for a $65K job, Matt. Can you help?”

Me: ((Looks at background)) Why only $65K?

“Balance. I have a lifelong pension, but still want to add value. And I don’t want a management role.”

Me: Understood. I may have the PERFECT Business Analyst role for you.

That day—

I set him up with a LinkedIn connection and they talked.

The next week—

He was offered the #BusinessAnalyst role…

At a $80K salary.

He was a little overqualified, but there was a mutual understanding.

Not every #transitioningmilitary wants a six-figure job.

A neighborhood kid asked if he could mow my yard.

“No, I still love mowing my yard, but do you pick up pine cones?”

“I can, sir. Is tomorrow at noon a good time to start? Is $20 an hour good?

Yup! See you then, I said.
(It takes me 1.5 hours to pick them all up)

The next day—

He shows up at 11:45am and begins to work.

At 12:30, he had all the pine cones picked up.

I hand him $30.

“Sir? I earned $10. It only took me a 1/2 hour.”

You finished the job in half the time it takes me.

You’ve earned $30.

And you should charge by the job, not by time.

Four Lessons here—

1 - Just because you get an initial “No”, there may be another opportunity.

Stay positive!

2 - You may be an expert in one area, but remain open to others.

Accepting unfamiliar jobs leads to professional growth.

3 - Being fair is easy.

Anyone can do it and we set a better example for others.

4 - Feedback in valuable.

Invest time improving others—it’s life changing.
