Excellent dissection of six types of #Greenwash by the ever excellent Planet Tracker:

Greencrowding is built on the belief that you can hide in a crowd to avoid discovery; it relies on safety in numbers. If sustainability policies are being developed, it is likely that the group will move at the speed of the slowest.

Greenlighting occurs when company communications (including advertisements) spotlight a particularly green feature of its operations or products, however small, in order to draw attention away from environmentally damaging activities being conducted elsewhere.

Greenshifting is when companies imply that the consumer is at fault and shift the blame on to them

Greenlabelling is a practice where marketers call something green or sustainable, but a closer examination reveals that their words are misleading

Greenrinsing refers to when a company regularly changes its ESG targets before they are achieved.

Greenhushing refers to the act of corporate management teams under-reporting or hiding their sustainability credentials in order to evade investor scrutiny.

Unilever's bold commitment to take oil out of its Homecare products by 2030 is not just a game changer for the category but its also a call to arms and pathway for all those companies using oil as an ingredient to remove it. We have (long) pathways to take oil out of cars (EVs) and power (renewables), even plastics has an adoptable pathway (circular economy) but oil as an ingredient has been little discussed. This is Unilever's Head of R&D Ian Howell talking about the science behind the shift https://lnkd.in/ggHjFXN

Well someone saw it coming. August 14th 1912 edition of New Zealand's Rodney and Otamatea Times, Waitemata and Kaipara Gazette notes burning 2bn tons pa of coal would create 7bn tons of CO2 which 'makes air a more effective blanket for the earth and to raise its temperature..... the effect may be considerable in a few centuries'. Reminds us that the science behind the #climatecrisis' is simple, the problem living in plain sight for 100+ years (via @valaafshar)

Let this sink in, Climate Action Tracker has looked in depth at 37 of the countries signed up to attend COP26 and only one, well done Gambia, is taking ACTION in line with a 1.5C world.

UK nearly there but needs policies to turn ambition into action (!!).
EU, Japan and USA insufficient.
Canada, India, China, Brazil highly insufficient
Saudi Arabia, Russia critically insufficient

An awful lot needs to happen in the next few weeks to make #COP26 the success it so urgently needs to be (thanks Dr Simon Evans of Carbon Brief)
