In January 1995, I became the British number-one table tennis player for the very first time, at the age of 24.

Practically every man or woman who triumphs against the odds is, on closer inspection, a beneficiary of unusual circumstances, myself included.

- My parents bought a table tennis table. This was the first bit of good fortune.

- My brother loved table tennis as much as I. We would play together for ages, blissfully accumulating thousands of hours of practice.

- My sports teacher took a particular interest in table tennis, above most other sports.

- The place where I was able to practice table tennis had 1 advantage that made it most unique: it was open 24 hours a day.

Where the majority of delusion lies is in focusing on triumph without looking at the journey that came before.

Often when we examine the end result, we fail to consider the effort, sacrifice, mistakes and hard work that had to all fall into place to make it happen.

Each of us has the power to shape our own fortune.
