My third interview in the US was a big learning point. I was 2 months into the job-hunt-drill and was extremely impatient. I just wanted a job!

This was an accounting role with a small manufacturing company in Ohio. I remember pleading to the controller and offered to do extra hours for less pay. She heard me out and asked - “do you want THIS JOB or do you want A JOB?”

She advised me to play to my strengths, pick up a niche field, do applications for roles that were of my interest and be patient. Our conversation moved from an interview to a career-guidance.

From then onwards, I only applied for roles in audit. Yes the number of opportunities was way lesser, but a lot more landed up getting converted to an offer. It took time but it happened. And audit has taken me to over 20 countries since then!

Each time you look at a job opening, ask yourself this- “do you want THIS JOB or do you want A JOB?”
I spent the last month in India, being by my family’s side when covid hit home. My father in law got extremely sick and the trip was full of anxiety and hospital runs.
The anxiety was unparalleled.
The fear of losing a father again, was killing.
The suffering of people all around us made us numb.
These are extremely tough times. Personally, we all know someone who’s been impacted by covid. Professionally, career prospects seem dull for many.
Exams have been postponed, jobs have been lost and salaries have been cut. But I hope we all take a step back to assess our mental health in such times.
I know my mental health suffered quite a bit in the last 40 days. I am working on it. And I hope you do the same.

Stay safe, get vaccinated if you can and prioritize your mental well-being.
When things do not work out, you have only 2 options- MOVE OUT or MOVE ON.

I have been an excellent student academically all through my school life. The natural impulse was to take up ‘Science’ after Grade 10. But looking at my brother’s science books, I decided this is not for me. Mind you- I hadn’t even looked at ‘Commerce’ books. But I knew MOVING OUT was right for me. No regrets, but extreme surprise at how easy that choice was. It didn’t need a lot of analysis.

Cut to becoming a CA and looking for a job post qualification. My academic graph dipped quite a bit post school. From a 97.25%, I went to ‘nothing-at-all’. My first few interviews focused on that a lot- I was told I didn’t score well in CA for a reason. I was asked to introspect and figure out if this was really a career for me. But I knew the right thing to do, was to MOVE ON. I had my family to support and taking those comments to heart, would get me nowhere.

7 years, 3 countries and 2 families later, I’m proud of the choices I made. Whether you are moving out or moving on, as long as you get to decide for yourself, you’ll find contentment. The good or bad, the wins or the losses, the smiles or tears- ALL will be YOURS to feel! And there is no better feeling like being the captain of your own ship 🤩

While I was taking ideas for my first job as a CA, few seniors suggested I find my way to Investment Banking. They said it's the most lucrative field- great money and exciting life. Getting into IB meant one has arrived- and there, I was bit by the IB bug!

Internet helped me with basic research and I landed an interview with a boutique firm. The conversation began with me stressing upon how badly I wanted to do IB.

'Have you interned in IB?'- No
'Do you understand basics of how financial market work?'- I wrote a paper in Financial markets for CA and scored 70+
'Have you spoken to or shadowed someone doing IB?'- No
'How do you know you LOVE IB?'- **Blank**

I claimed to in love with an abstract of my own imagination. The rejection in the interview hurt a lot but I knew it was a dead pursuit- I WAS WRONG! Accepting my mistake was tough.

Eventually, I made a list of the fields I could possibly start off in, spoke to people working in those fields, zeroed down to 2 fields that interested me, worked in both of them and finally, stuck to 1- AUDIT.

6 years later, I got all that defined 'lucrative'- great money and exciting life. But I also got a fun career, a job I love doing, a manager who cares and a peaceful personal life. IB or no IB- I have arrived.

The recession is approaching and you must be thinking that finding jobs would be difficult. But in reality, the case is quite different. 👀

Ireland is still seeing record labor shortages. Yes, and it’s an English-speaking country, which makes it easy for you if you wish to move across the country. Here are a few reasons why you should consider moving to Ireland:

✨Shortages exist across multiple industries (source: Dublin.ie September 2022 data).
✨Benefits of moving to Ireland: you can apply for your own work permit and can get PR in 2 years.
✨Some fields like healthcare, business, finance, etc. have special exemptions.
✨A new process has been established to move work permit applications online and expedite the process.

Well, there are pros and cons of moving to any country. Always research the cost of living, housing, inflation, and other expenses before making a decision. ✌️

The government has a portal for foreigners to look for jobs. If you are considering moving to Ireland, then apply using the link in the comments section below 👇
