Keep nurses as far away from the money as possible
Why?
I’ll tell you
Power and money
Here’s the relative timeline:
1920’s
Nursing was the greatest path to women’s financial independence
Nurses turned hospitals around, improving safety and outcomes
Nursing was billed as a separate line item on a hospital bill
Hospitals became the center of healthcare delivery
1930’s
Insurance models boomed and hospitals wanted new billing methods
Hospitals emulated hotels, began adding nursing into room rates
Hospitals reduced nurses to costs, and away from the money
2023
Nurses strike because they are selfish
Nurses don’t deserve reimbursement
Nurses are a cost center
We've gotten it wrong for 100 years
Here’s a basic equation to realize the importance of nursing
Profit = Revenue - Cost
Great, reduce cost (nursing), improve profit
The issue is nurses aren’t a cost
Costs don’t add value
Costs can be reduced
Costs can be eliminated
But here is what happens when nursing is reduced
Increase avoidable deaths
Increase in medical errors
Increase in length of stay
Increase in readmissions
Increase infection rates
Not to mention the decreases
In quality
In patients
In lab tests
In surgeries
In satisfaction
Decrease in revenue drivers
It’s simple
Nurses are not a cost driver
Nurses are not a revenue driver
Nurses are a profit center
Let’s not let 100 year old policy keep degrading one of the most noble professions providing untold value to patients and their institutions
Bonus points…
Nurses had their autonomy taken as the tides turned through hospital and health system employment
How many doctors are employed these days?
