How digging holes is helping to save the planet!

Amazing work from Justdiggit
It was really exciting to work with the BBC on creating a TikTok and Instagram Reel for their channels to help promote the amazing new series of The Green Planet.

In 2017, UNILAD was the most popular social channel in the world, with over 40 billion video views and over 1.1 billion people liking, commenting or sharing our content. Insane numbers made into reality by our insanely hardworking teams. 5 years ago, UNILAD was just a small Facebook page that we ran from our bedrooms. Today we have three offices in Manchester, London and New York and nearly 200 incredible people as part of the family. Along with the numbers, I couldn’t be prouder of some of the things we’ve managed to raise awareness about this year. From the inhumane treatment of animals, either for the meat industry or the tourism industry, to male suicide and showcasing places where men can go to get support. We’ve got some amazing things to come in 2018 and couldn’t be more excited for the year ahead. Thanks to everyone who put a smile on my face and made me laugh in 2017. (Sorry for the slightly delayed new year message!)

Meet the people protecting the Amazon rainforest and preserving its massive biodiversity!

Amazon Frontlines an organization of Western and Indigenous activists, works with frontline communities to safeguard the rainforest, defend human rights, and fight for clean water and land rights.

From securing ancestral land for the Siekopai people after an 80-year fight, to stopping destructive mining projects at the headwaters of one of Ecuador’s most important rivers, they are proof that people power works.

This year they won the 2024 Hilton Humanitarian Prize, often called the Nobel Prize for Nonprofits, for their scalable, proven model of Indigenous led conservation.

40% of intact and thriving ecosystems on Earth are managed and protected by Indigenous peoples.

So supporting Indigenous communities is one of the best ways to support our planet!

This Italian fisherman did something incredible to protect the ocean from destructive fishing!

Meet Paolo Fanciulli, a 60-year-old fisherman who's been fighting against illegal trawling.

Trawling is a type of fishing that drags heavy nets across the seafloor, massively reducing fish populations and destroying marine habitats.

So how did Paolo fight back?

He teamed up with local sculptors and created huge marble artworks which he then dropped into the Mediterranean Sea.

These heavy sculptures created an underwater museum that would rip trawling nets as they pass by and help scare off illegal fishers.

And the best thing about it is, it's working!

Seagrass beds, an essential habitat and carbon store, are growing back, and the area is attracting more marine life like lobsters, turtles, and even dolphins!
Thanks to Paolo and the hard work of local sculptors, there are now 80 statues standing guard over the ocean floor, and he wants to add more!

Trawler fishing is illegal in Italy because of the damage it does to marine ecosystems, but it's hard to enforce and is often done at night.

So sometimes, creative solutions like this and creative humans like Paolo are the best way to fight back and make positive change for our oceans.
