Can we stop asking candidates why they want to work for your company in a first interview?

Maybe they need a meeting or two with their potential manager and some key stakeholders before they answer that question.

You don’t ask someone why they want to marry you on a first date. Give them time to get to know you and see if you even share similar values.

I find it interesting that after I post about systemic discrimination being a real thing here in Quebec, I receive messages about how it’s not happening. Seems I’ve upset the apple cart and I DON’T CARE. Bring it. Because it’s up to people like me who pass (Biracial father, white mother) and the white community to call this out every single time. I’m a 48 year old woman with over 17 years in recruitment and I know for a fact it’s happening. And if we don’t bring this up and discuss it and have the steadfast commitment to ending this insanity, how can we ask people of colour to do it? What does Canadian experience even mean?

A contact of mine had worked a number of years in HR.

And then he was recruited to lead an HR department.Ā  Only he had no experience in labour relations in Canada or anywhere else.

But the VP felt that this was someone who could learn and invested in that learning.Ā  And he was hugely successful in his role.

So explain to me, how talent from outside of Canada comes here with degrees and experience that many of us will never touch but is told that they can’t work in their profession because they don’t have ā€œCanadian experienceā€.Ā 

What does that even mean?

Unless you require a certification of some sort or a knowledge of specific laws, then what is so incredible about Canadian experience?Ā 

We have a talent shortage of epic proportions.Ā 

We have manufacturing facilities that can’t run a third shift because they simply do not have the talent or the leadership to do so.Ā 

We’re being told that half of Canadians want to make a change next year and yet here we are telling global talent that opt to come to this country that they cannot get hired because they haven’t worked here before?Ā 

We need to get over ourselves.
