I interviewed someone with a 17 month gap on their resume.

Me: I’m just curious, why the gap? Did your employer lay you off?

Him: No, I quit. My fathers health declined. So I relocated to take care of him and spend as much time with him as I could before I had to say goodbye.

Me: That says a lot about who you are. We can always start a new job but we can never get our time back with the people we love.

He will get the chance to work with us.

WHY? A person who knows when to leave a job to be there for their family is the type of person I want to work with.

Who agrees ? 👇👇👇
My neighbor lost his corporate job two months ago. To make ends meet he started cleaning cars, painting homes, and even cutting grass. Some of his colleagues laughed. They thought it was “beneath him.”

His only focus was to provide for his family.

Fast forward, people are happy with his work and have referred friends. He’s making almost as much money as he was before.

Defeat is a choice. He made a choice to not accept defeat. Never down someone who refuses to give up.

Employers,

Stop asking candidates to have a degree when:
a) you pay $14.00 an hour with no benefits
b) the skills for the job can easily be taught
c) your job descriptions don’t match reality

Sincerely,

Everyone and their mother.

2 years ago I quit my job because my boss made me choose between staying in the hospital at my sick daughter’s side or going to work. At first, I didn’t understand such cruelty. But looking back it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Because I was treated that way, I QUIT a job and STARTED a new path. I bet on myself and it led me to where I am today.

Sometimes things happen to force you into a new direction because you are meant for more.

Trust the timing of your life.

Dear job candidate,

If you don’t greet the receptionist or the janitor while you wait for your interview, we don’t want you on the team.

EVERYONE on our team matters.

What you fail to realize - is that the janitor or receptionist may not be the “hiring manager” or “decision-maker” you came to impress, but their opinion of you may influence the ultimate decision.

The decision-maker may really value their feedback and may purposefully seek it.

So get off your phone while you wait for your interview, be present, and greet everyone you come across - be it the owner of the company or the janitor - because you never know who the true “decision-maker” really is and you never know whose opinion they value most.

Your education, experience, and proven track record as a “team player” mean nothing if you don’t show basic respect and people skills.

Integrity is everything.

Someone with a weak resume.
Can be a strong hire.

Someone over 55 years old.
Can be technologically savvy.

Someone with a heavy accent.
Can be a phenomenal communicator.

Someone without a degree.
Can be extremely intelligent.

Someone who's a single parent.
Can be very reliable.

Throw away the “rules.“ Stop assuming you know what people can bring to the table based their resume, age, education, etc.

To build something extraordinary, you have to do things different.

A job doesn’t make you secure.
Purpose does.

A degree doesn’t make you smart.
Self-education does.

A title doesn’t make you important.
Helping others does.

Who’s with me?

“I can’t stand my boss.”

My friend asked for two days paid time off.

He followed policy.

And submitted the request 30 days prior.

The request was denied.

Then, he asked just for one day.

Because this event he wants to go to means a lot to him and his loved ones.

The request was denied yet again.

Now, he has to decide between going to an important family event or keeping his job.

The worst part is when he said this, “It’s destroyed my trust for them and the bond we’ve built over the last two years.”

Employers, make your decisions wisely.

In one selfish decision you can destroy trust that has taken years to build.

Employees are partners, not slaves.

Treat them as such or lose them to a company that will.

We interviewed someone who wasn’t the best fit. But it felt wrong to just call and say “you weren’t chosen.” So we did these two things:

1. We called to give them feedback on how they could improve their interview skills. ‹
2. We sent a quick email that outlined a couple ways they could improve their resume.

It feels terrible to be rejected on your job search, and be left in the dark on why.

So before you reject someone and go about your business, provide them with feedback to improve their chances of landing their next job interview.

Thoughts?

My friend got demoted at work.

Now she has to train her replacement.

She feels humiliated.

Stripped of her title.

Issued a 13% pay cut.

When she asked her boss if the demotion was related to work performance, his reply was...

“We’re restructuring.”

What she really feels is that she failed to play the office politics game well.

And is getting penalized for it.

Now she goes into work every morning fearing she will get fired when she is done training her replacement.

It’s causing her to live in a constant state of anxiety and stress. She called Courtney and me, in tears, to ask for advice on what to do.

We told her to update her resume, network on LinkedIn, and plan her departure.

Because no one should get demoted and have to train their replacement.

No job is worth your mental health.

Repeat after me: A degree doesn’t guarantee a better hire.

Some people on our team don't have a bachelor's degree.

We gave them a chance based on their eagerness to learn.

And it was one of the best things we've done.

The bottom line is this: a degree doesn't always guarantee someone will be a better fit.

Because a degree doesn't guarantee a team player, integrity, communication, compassion and the burning desire to learn new skills necessary to thrive at work.

Employers should stop rejecting - otherwise highly qualified candidates - for entry-level positions, just because they don’t have a fancy degree.

Eliminating degree requirements can give employers the competitive edge and talent they are looking for.

While giving someone the chance they've been waiting for.

Never reject someone’s connection because of their current title or status.
I told my team, “I won’t be available today. I have to spend time with Liv.”

I’ve been traveling a lot and we deserve a mommy-daughter day.

No questions were asked, they respect it.

Because I do the same for them.

When Christopher lost his childhood friend and had to attend a funeral in Georgia...

When Ela has to spend quality time with her family before a travel work trip...

When Joy had to step up her focus on training to complete her first IronMan...

When Courtney has to savor the few days her parents are in town to give them her undivided attention...

We are there for each other.

And because we are a team we make sure the work gets done!

Even when one of our main players is out for a few hours, the day, or the week.

We don’t want any person on our team to ever feel guilty for being there for their family.

Or regret not having been there for the special moments for anyone they care about.

Family first, always.

2 years ago Lisa was a prostitute.

Addicted to pills.

She would never smile.

Because she was missing all her teeth.

Her boyfriend knocked them out.

He frequently beat her.

Her worst nightmare was realized the day she lost custody of her newborn because she refused to report the domestic violence.

Today she‘s been sober nearly two years.

Left her abusive relationship.

Owns a legal business.

That employs almost 10 people.

Saved to get oral reconstructive surgery.

She has her smile back.

Finished parenting classes.

Regained custody of her daughter.

So she has a reason to smile again.

Even at the lowest point of your life, you can make decisions that will bring positive changes.

I was jobless
Late on my car payment
About to get evicted
And a single Mom

Life was not easy...
not even close.

I almost lost faith in myself
I almost gave up on my dreams
I almost gave in to my fears

But instead I got up again...
I started to reinvent myself

I knew to change my life,
I had to change

I knew that the beginning was going to be the hardest... because I was planting seeds that would need time to grow

On days I felt frustrated because I couldn’t see any results yet, I had to remind myself that God’s plan for me is big and that the results and the blessings would come

3 years later I’ve built a life that I would never take a vacation from, an online business that gives me joy & fulfillment and the freedom to spend more time with my daughter (after all we only have 18 summers with our children before they’re all grown up)

Wherever you are in your journey, just know that tough times never last, tough people do.

Recruiters and Hiring Managers,

Please delete job posts for roles that have already been filled or that are no longer available. People are going through enough already. They spend their time and energy applying to these posts, just to find out they never even had a chance.

It’s the right thing to do.

Thanks,

5 Signs You Have a Bad Boss:

- Takes credit for your work when it makes them look good

- Shows zero appreciation when you do a good job

- Tells you what to do instead of shows you what to do

- Does nothing about toxic employees

- Micromanages you

Life is too short to tolerate a bad boss that does not respect you or that hinders your growth.

I wasn’t chosen for a promotion at my first job out of college. It went to a co-worker because “she had been at the company longer.”

That’s when I told my manager I was leaving.

Management tried to convince me to stay with a desk plaque and a tiny solo office, but it was too late.

90 days later I was at a healthcare startup, feeling happier and making more money.

What NOT getting that promotion taught me:
- Always recognize people for their stellar performance
- Always give promotions before people feel under appreciated
- Never base promotions on office politics
- Never assume you’re going to get promoted because you’re a higher performer or you work harder

And lastly, never stay in a workplace where you feel unappreciated.

Your peace of mind is worth more than that.

Can anyone explain why employers continue to require Bachelor’s degrees for Admin, Sales, and Customer Service jobs?

Don’t hire for degrees, hire for attitude.
Headhunters,

Stop advertising jobs just so you can collect applicant resumes to grow your database, and then instantly ghostđŸ‘» the applicants.

They spent their time to personalize their resume for your job post. Being ghosted never feels good.

Although this may be the “new norm” it isn’t the right thing to do. What’s popular isn’t always what’s right.

Employers,

Please pay your interns! It’s hard for them to learn, give their best, and gain experience they need when their family can’t financially support them. Most students truly can’t afford to work for free.

My grandfather made a choice at 30.

To immigrate from Cuba to America.

He lost everything.

He lost his engineering degree.

He lost all his money.

He lost his clothes.

He lost his friends.

He lost his home.

When he arrived to Miami, he only had the shirt on his back, a $100 bill and a dream.

He didn’t complain.

He didn’t focus on what he lost.

He didn’t blame his circumstances.

He got three jobs.

He saved money.

He enrolled for English classes.

He networked with people.

He bought a small piece of property.

He opened a mechanic shop.

He delivered great services.

He grew it to two shops.

He made more money.

He bought a home.

He grew to three shops.

He paid for his children’s education.

He helped others like him get on their feet.

He kept building and never gave up.

My grandfather had to rebuild his life from nothing at 30 years old.

He risked it all for the opportunity of “The American Dream.” For the freedom to live life on his terms.

He believed in himself so much.

That he risked everything for his dream.

What will you risk for yours?

Stop tolerating these five things starting now:

- Work that makes you unhappy

- Any type of negativity from anyone
- Wasting time by waiting for “the perfect time”

Dear Recruiters,

As powerful as ATS systems have become, they still aren’t as good as a HUMAN when it comes to vetting a candidate. Don’t rely on them to do your job! Also, stop creating job descriptions that are so unrealistic that people feel forced to throw EVERYTHING into their resumes in the hopes of getting a chance at a callback.

Sincerely,

LinkedIn isn’t a job finder, it’s a people finder. When you connect with the right people, you’ll find your next opportunity.

I know a man who was FIRED.

Just a month before his daughter was born.

He depended on his honest salary to live.

He felt angry and humiliated, but needed to figure out a way to make money.

Everyone he knew in real estate drove nice cars, so he became a real estate agent. He wanted to build something no one could take away from him.

He threw away his TV, started to take care of his health and began to read 📚 on personal development. He applied what he read. He started to see results.

In 3 years he had 40 agents working under him. Then, the 2008 recession hit. He lost it all, but refused to lose himself in the process.

He thought about how he could live a life of meaning by helping others do the same.

He did his research, gathered a team, created a product that people needed, and launched FITTEAM GLOBAL.

In their first year, they exceeded their sales forecast by 1900%.

In just five years, they have helped thousands upon thousands of people live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Morale of the story: Sometimes losing your job is the best thing that can happen to you.

p.s. this is Christopher Hummel’s story!

You can be 10 minutes late for the interview and still get hired.

You can have a typo on your resume and still get hired.

You can have a gap in your work history and still get hired.

Build your network. The people who know, like and trust you will open more doors for you than recruiters or ATS ever will.

WARNING:

Once you start to post content and gain a level of visibility, the bullies will come. You aren’t alone.

People may attack you in the comments, in private messages and even publicly in their own posts.

Without even knowing you or ever having a conversation with you.

It comes with the territory of growth.

To everyone who has asked for my opinion on this topic, my personal recommendation is not to engage.

Because what people say about you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their character.

Results have a beautiful way of making it hard to hear critics over the applause.

People always say, “Winners don’t quit.”

But, that’s not true.

Winners quit all the time.

They quit jobs, relationships, habits and thoughts when they recognize that they no longer align with their purpose.

It takes courage to quit things.

It takes discipline to say “no” to immediate pleasures so that you can invest in long-term rewards.

It takes believing in yourself enough to give it all you’ve got, heart and soul, so that you can reinvent yourself and have the freedom you’ve always dreamed of.

A huge part of growth is knowing what to let go of and what to focus your energy on.

What are your thoughts?

I believe that everyone we meet in life, we meet for a reason.

I've met 100+ connections, in person, in January.

And plan to meet even more in person in February.

When you meet people in person...

Be the reason that they smile.

Be the listener they really need.

Be the friend that they've been searching for.

Try to impact everyone you meet in a positive way...

That they should always walk away feeling better after meeting you.

Be a light in a world full of darkness.

Be a giver in a world full of takers.

Be real in a world full of fakes.

2 years ago I didn't have $500 to my name.

Today I interviewed Grant Cardone.

Tomorrow I interview John Lee.

And that's just the beginning of January podcast guests.

A lot can change in 2 years.

Like Christopher always says...

Dream BIG.

Take massive action.

And be consistent.

Small actions compound,

Into BIG results.
Being on LinkedIn and not CONNECTING with people you don't know is limiting your growth. Everyone you trust was once a stranger.

I've met people on LinkedIn who became family, friends, mentors, and clients.

And, I want to help you do the same:

1. Like this post.

2. Comment below if you’re open to new connections

3. Send a connection request to everyone that leaves a comment.

EVERYONE IS A VALUABLE CONNECTION! You’re one person away from your next big opportunity.

Hire with empathy.
To everyone in the corporate world,

Don’t blindly trust your company. To protect yourself from the “everyone is replaceable” corporate mentality, build your own network outside of your company.

That way, should you ever get demoted, fired or want to move onto the next chapter in your career, your next opportunity is only a few calls away.
