Which generation are you? You have probably heard people say, ā€˜I’m a Gen Z’ or a ā€˜Baby Boomer’ or perhaps a ā€˜Gen Alpha’. These terms come up often in business meetings, semi-formal gatherings and even on-on-one conversations. You might miss out on good conversations if you aren’t familiar with these terms.

I will talk about the 7 most recent generations based on timeline starting with the most recent below:

1. Gen Alpha- People born after 2010. This generation was born during the social media age and also during the digital technology era. They are called ā€˜digital natives’ because they were born in the age of technology.

2. Gen Z- Born 1997 - 2010. They were born in the age of digital technology and are also referred to as ā€˜digital natives’.

3. Millennials- Born 1981- 1996. Millennials are also called Generation Y for following after Generation X.

4. Gen X- Born 1965 - 1980. They were the first generation to grow up with personal computers to some extent.

5. Baby boomer generation- Born 1946 - 1964. This generation was born immediately after World War 2.

6. The Silent Generation- Born 1925 - 1945- They were born during the Great Depression. They were children during the War War 2. They were called the Silent Generation because they weren’t loud as a group: no protests.

7. The Greatest Generation (GI Generation) or WWII- Born between 1901 - 1924. They likely fought the World War 2. They were named the ā€˜Greatest Generation’ by a famous newscaster; Tom Brokaw because they fought for selfless reasons such as protecting people in other countries.

Hope you found this helpful. Kindly share with others.

Note: Some scholars also speak about Generation Xennials (born 1977-1983) and Generation Jones (born 1955- 1965). You can read more online.

Meanwhile, which generation are you?

'Testing microphone. Soundcheck'

Ever heard these words at an event?

Here are a few of the things that I do before my events begin:

Soundcheck: Time to liaise with the technical team to ensure that the sound is good enough. The sound/technical team usually does this independently. However, its important for a compere to verify that the sound system is working properly.

Get accustomed to the equipment: On one accasion, I got to the venue and found out the lectern was obstructing the screen. I liaised with the team in-charge and it was moved to a better spot.

Get accustomed to the venue: Time to find a suitable entrance to the podium and an exit, as well as an emergency exit, the convenience etc

Meet the organisers and vendors: It's time to confirm instructions from the organisers or event planners and find out any last-minute changes. Time to network with other vendors such as the ushers, photographers and videographers who are important team players.

Meet guests and participants: By interacting with the guest and participants, I discover their expectations for the event and make them feel welcome.

Your favourite compere wishes you a happy new year!

Have you heard about the word ā€˜palindrome’?

A palindrome is a word, number, phrase or a sequence of symbols that is spelt the same way backwards and forward.

Example of words are Madam, Rotator, Deed, Level,

Examples of phrases are ā€˜Race car’ or ā€˜Never odd or even’ If you put the words together and spell them backwards, you will get the same thing.

Examples of numbers are ā€˜12321’

Examples of dates: 12th of February, 2021 which is written as ā€˜12-02-2021’ based on the Day-Month-Year format. If you turn it backwards, the numbers are the same.

Here’s another example if you use the Month-Day-Year format: March, 20, 2023 written as ā€˜3-20-2023’ Tried turning it backwards?

Hope you learnt something new and fun. Feel free to share.

Meanwhile, can you share other examples of palindromes?

Whether it’s a Presidential or government function or a private sector-led or international community-led event or an end-of-the-year party or informal celebration, it’s always an honour to serve as a Master of Ceremonies or if you prefer, Professional Servant of Ceremonies.šŸ˜€

This feedback from my client, the Chairperson of the Event Management committee of the NESG made me smile after I co-hosted the 29th Nigerian Economic Summit:

ā€˜Hi Temi, it’s my utmost pleasure to have had you as one of our MCs for NES #29. You did very well. You owned the stage and that was what was important for us seeing our MC confident on stage even in front of the President of Nigeria. Well done indeed!’ - Mrs Bioye Davies; Chairperson, NES #29 Events Planning & Management Sub-Committee & CEO, Senantra Limited (Event Managers)

I’m thankful for the privilege to serve new and returning clients.

When the University of Bristol in the UK invited me to speak to its students about leveraging LinkedIn and networking, my desire was to connect with the students and impact them. To do this effectively, I sought answers to these 4 questions below:

1. Who is my audience?- Understanding the audience demography is key to connecting with the audience. It would be ineffective to train students the same way I train an association of industry experts and professionals. During pre-event briefing phase, I learnt that my audience were undergraduate international students from different continents.

2. What are the needs of my audience? - It’s important to identlify the needs of my audience. Why did the university deem it fit to organise such a training session and invite me? Which challenge are they trying to solve? What is the expected outcome of the training? By understanding this, I could measure the success of my session. For example, I learnt that my audience were majorly interested in securing internship placements and job opportunities, so I showed them how LinkedIn would help them achieve their goals.

3. How much time do I have for my presentation? - This is a practical question that every speaker ought to ask. Having a foreknowledge of the time allotted helped me organize my thoughts and manage my time effectively.

4. What’s the format of presentation?- Is it fireside chat or a keynote style or round table discussion or a panel style? Do I need to prepare slides? Armed with information, I prepared for the event. At the end of the day, I was touched by the heartwarming glowing feedback from students who had decided to leverage LinkedIn and staff who attended my training session at the University of Bristol, UK. It was a good experience.

Hope you found this useful.

What’s your strength? I’m not talking about what you wrote on your CV to appeal to recruiters. I’m talking about what you genuinely consider to be your strength(s).

Sometimes, we are unaware of this. Some of these things come to us naturally while we have learnt some over time. For example, you may be a kind and thoughtful person who builds and maintains relationships over years but you never realized that it’s a strength. Have you nurtured relationships from primary school till date? Now, that’s something unique.

I know a friend who I refer to as ā€˜the calm in the storm’. He’s always very calm in the midst of unfavorable circumstances, able to work under intense pressure and analyze situations logically. I called his attention to this strength.

Sometimes, it takes friends, people around us and deep introspection to identify our strength but it’s worth the effort. So today, I urge you to take a step back and identify your strength(s) in life. Ask different people who know you if you need to. It may not be what the recruiter wants to hear but it’s important to know yourself on this journey called life.

Just yesterday, I was speaking with my older sister Anjolaoluwa Popoola, MPH and I identified a strength of mine. I am friendly and I make people feel special, honoured and happy not just on the stage as an event host but in one-on-one conversation. I learnt this from my mum. She is warm and treats everyone with respect irrespective of their social class.

Psychologists have found that the human brain has a natural tendency to remember negative experiences or interactions more than positive ones. This is an opportunity to focus on the positive, pat yourself on the back and become better.

Trust your day is going well.

Feel free to share.

I sat there, listening to Kenechukwu share an experience from years ago. He used to turn off his camera during conference calls with some clients so they won’t find out that the brilliant lawyer that impressed them was young.

I could relate. It reminded me about walking into some high-profile conferences as the moderator and I couldn’t help but notice that I was one of the youngest in those corporate events or at least, I looked like one. Thanks to the baby face.

I’ll never forget the day I moderated an event for a bank and one of the leaders confessed that she was pleasantly surprised about the excellent way that I moderated the event because she had misjudged me by my 16-year old looks.

I’m glad that the brilliant Kenechukwu has embraced his young looks and intellectual prowess. Double package! Over time, he has proved himself to his clients and earned their trust.

To him, I say: Onwards and upwards!

To you, I’ve got a different message:

You are not too black, too young, too tall, too white, too old, too female, too male or too anything that’s not good enough.

You are enough

I just finished a pre-event briefing online with a client and thought to share 5 benefits of discussing with your webinar moderator ahead of a virtual conference.

1. It's an opportunity to discuss the client's expectation, the general flow of event and any alternative plans.

2. The webinar moderator will become aware of the tech platform and other tech requirements for the webinar.

3. The moderator will become familiar with other team players and find out who to liaise with on the d-day. Less confusion equals more clarity.

4. The moderator could ask questions on grey areas which the event organiser could clarify. Sometimes, the moderator may point out a lacuna that the organisers didn't observe.

5. The moderator, who brings some knowledge and experience to the table, could share useful suggestions with the clients.

Shout out to everyone who is building something: a business, family, relationships, online community, house, career, social enterprise etc.

As you are probably aware, I'm building a community for people who are interested in public speaking, professional branding and networking. Dear Connections,

I have been thinking about a Project that would spotlight some young professionals in Nigeria and I’m excited about it.

If you believe that your organization would be interested in sponsorship, please send me a DM.

Meanwhile, what do you do when you feel super excited? A friend of mine paces the room because he’s too excited to sit still. Some people dance. Some jump.

For me, I wear a big smile when I’m excited and I usually forget that I haven’t eaten all day. There’s the part where I start singing too.

Best wishes,

Temi Popoola

Woke up to a global recognition as one of the Top 200 LinkedIn creators worldwide a few days ago and I haven’t found the perfect words yet but I’ll try. This list by Favikon recognizes 200 creators from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and other continents and I am honoured to have been named No 83 LinkedIn creator globally.

I appreciate Favikon for the recognition. I celebrate the other 5 Nigerians who were recognized on the list. Congratulations šŸŽ‰

This recognition isn’t just mine- It’s for my big community on LinkedIn. It’s for everyone who follows, supports, engages with my content, sends kind words, shares constructive criticism and refers me for opportunities. This is for us! Thank you so much.

All glory to God for my growth!

I shared this message in Dubai earlier this year with female leaders who converged at The International Woman Leadership Conference in Dubai organized by Mrs Ibukun Awosika

Feeling nervous before your presentation is normal. Respected speakers feel like that sometimes. You aren’t alone. It’s what you do about it that makes a difference.

If you agree, say AYE!

And 2 months later, we have another powerful public speaking training coming soon: Read about it here:

https://lnkd.in/eimdxUZ4

.................................

They almost made me cry. On the last day of the 3-day public speaking training for professionals, entrepreneurs and business executives, participants shared the most beautiful feedback.

Mr Lubem Ajiva opened the floor when he said that the training was by far worth more than 50,000 NGN he paid.

Then other participants began to speak. Some tagged me in social media posts and sent me messages.

What can I say?

Thank you for believing in my work enough to invest your money in attending my public speaking classes.

Thank you for the kind words. You sure know how to make a person smile.

Thank you for sending other clients my way.

AND to my dearest Connections online:

Thank you for the hype

Thank you for your support

YOU are amazing

If you are already following Temi Popoola and Voices and Faces, look out for some important update coming soon.

How soon should we organize another training?

I'm grateful for God's favour and human relationships.

No man or business is an island (even though we play our part by being diligent)

It was at least 1 person that informed you about a job application, 1 person recommended you when there was an opportunity, 1 person encouraged you, 1 person became your first client, 1 person gave you a job, 1 person preached the gospel to you, 1 person taught you God's Word, 1 person inspires you from afar, 1 person collaborated with you.

I could go on and on. I'm hoping that this post helps you do 2 things:
1. Acknowledge people who have helped you.
2. Be the 1 person that another human needs.
