I studied in a school that paid respect to one of the greatest leaders of India on 1st August every year. On this day in 1920, India lost one of her greatest sons. He was the person who changed paradigms of leadership in my mind- why so? Read on ....
1. When political struggles were always a domain of a few in the society, he was the first one to understand that we will achieve our goal of Independence only if masses are involved- he was the first leader to involve masses - sarcastically called “telya-tambolyanche pudhari” - means leader of the rag-tag army. The britishers correctly identified the threat that he was by identifying him as “father of Indian unrest”.

2. He never believed that armed revolution was a path to independence but had the courage and magnanimity to acknowledge openly the patriotism of revolutionaries even if their path was different than his chosen path !

3. He was the first one to assert that “independence is my birth right!”

4. He had the courage to openly challenge the mighty British government and ask if they have lost their mind when he disagreed with their methods

5. Clarity of his thoughts : when he was asked why would he not lay more emphasis on social reforms his answer was clear - we need to fight the evil of foreign rule far more fiercely - I need to take everyone together. Having said that he was the one who wrote commentary on holy Geeta rather than just worshiping it as a holy text! Very few know him as a mathematics genius!!

6. He had the vision to say that we should get the British government on negotiating table as they are vulnerable with World War I - others differed saying we should not corner them when they are in trouble! We celebrate 1942 non cooperation movement during World War II but country lost a few precious years!!

7. So scared was the mighty British government at the peak of it’s power, that even at his advanced age they sent him to Mandalay for six years in conditions that would have broken many! The lion hearted man served his full sentence there!!

My list can go on and on but it would still fall short of describing one of our biggest heroes. Tribute to that great soul from a humble citizen of India - a country for which he sacrificed his whole life! A leader par excellence who was visionary but never lost touch with masses, a leader who was focused but had magnanimity to acknowledge different point of view when he saw a common purpose. May we be blessed with more such leaders 🙏🙏
