In honor of my super-hero.

I was around 12 years old the first time I realized my dad wasn’t a superhero. My mom had lost her 8th child and my dad cried. I didn’t know men cried and it shook me to the bone.

Growing up, Dad was our hero, just as he was to all the kids in town. He picked all the non-athletic kids for his little league team, ā€œGive me the skinny ones!ā€ And ended every summer with a confident bunch and the winningest team in town.

Dad had truckloads of physical affection, enough to go around. You couldn’t go within 2 feet of him without him grabbing a hand or a foot to give it a good massage. He had delicious warm hands which I’ve measured every man against.

Dad sang us to sleep at night before he left to work his second job. My favorite was ā€œVal-a Val-a-Vee-was-in-the- army!ā€ and he sang it with a real German accent. He had learned it fighting in WW2, where he learned how to speak german. Of course that wasn’t true, but to us it made Dad that much more exotic.

Dad discovered tennis in his 50’s and promptly set out to teach dozens of ā€œno-good teenagersā€ how to play. They called him ā€œthe manā€ and played out their troubles on the court.

As I got older, I learned that my dad had troubles of his own and realized superhero’s aren’t All-Super. But on the top of my list of what I am most thankful for in life, right there next to my Mom, is my Dad!

When I started out in the real estate industry, I had no money, no connections, and no experience. I had nothing to lose and nowhere to go but up. And because of that, I was never afraid to take a risk.Ā
I've taken risks throughout my entire career, as I worked my way from a diner waitress in New Jersey to the Queen of New York real estate, sold my business for $66 million, and became an investor on Shark Tank ABC.

I've worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs and can tell you that the most successful entrepreneurs are not afraid of risk. They're willing to try anything and throw a lot out there to see what sticks. Stability and inconsistency are the enemies of innovation, and it's innovation that pushes anyone ahead.

Whenever I take a risk I ask myself, ā€œWhat's the worst that could happen?ā€œ And I get right out there and try it. If it fails, who cares? You'll get great confidence from knowing you can try, try, and try again until you find something that sticks.

What would you say to your younger self?
I’m constantly inspired by brilliant entrepreneurs, and Jamie Kern Lima is no exception! I’m thrilled to have Jamie in the Tank as a Guest Shark tonight. Just wait til you see her in action!

Here are 3 powerful lessons everyone can learn from Jamie’s story:

Vulnerability is a strength. Jamie created IT Cosmetics to address her own skin challenges. She boldly took off her makeup on live TV to share her story, and that raw honesty got her instant trust and credibility.

Authenticity is a superpower. Today’s savvy customer knows what’s real and what isn’t. Give them the goods and they’ll reward you for it!

You are worthy! It’s the title of her book for a reason. Know your worth, then demand it.

Which lesson hits home for you the most? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! 🦈

When I started The Corcoran Group 50 years ago, I named it the group because I knew I would need to rely on everyone if I was going to make the company into what I dreamed it could be.

Cheers to 50 years and my deepest gratitude to all of the incredible agents over the years. These agents are the most positive, passionate, hard-working people in the industry!
Work-life balance doesn’t exist! Stop chasing it.
