“Before you are a leader, success is about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” — Jack Welch
Great leaders are those whose behavior powerfully leverages the system of brain interconnectedness. A potent way of becoming a leader is to find authentic contexts in which to learn the kind of social behavior that reinforce the brain's social circuitry.
Leading effectiveness is, in other words, less about mastering situations - or even mastering social skill sets - than about developing a genuine interest in and talent for fostering positive feelings in the people whose cooperation and support you need.
A collection of articles on EI for your weekend reading.
In this month's newsletter I discuss my response to recent criticism, share some about an assessment tool I have developed with Richard Boyatzis, and we hear from Elizabeth Solomon on the competence of the month, Organizational Awareness. I also provide an update on the podcast and a point to a few books worth the read.

“We’re all leaders in one situation or another, because if we influence, if we persuade, if we get people to change what they’re doing or send them in a certain direction, that is leadership. It’s the essence of what a leader does.” –from The Executive Edge: An Insider’s Guide to Outstanding Leadership
Engaging employees through purpose requires empathy, authenticity, and consistency.
According to a new report from Microsoft,  about 300 million jobs in the future will be impacted by artificial intelligence. This will mean a new way of working -- AI and humans side-by-side. And a global survey of leaders, the report says, targets three abilities as the “new core competencies”: analytical reasoning, flexibility, and emotional intelligence.

The case for EI gets stronger and stronger. In this month's newsletter I explore why these competencies are so important and how to develop them.

This month's newsletter is packed with insights on emotional intelligence including addressing some of the myths that surround my model. I

also share the two newest episodes of my podcast First Person Plural -- both on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. In the first episode, I speak with Modupe Akinola who shares some of the research on workforce diversity and the biases that affect the recruitment and retention of women and people of color in organizations. For the second episode, co-host Elizabeth Solomon talks with Tony Bond and Marcus Erb from the Great Place to Work US —the consultancy and research institute behind Fortune’s 100 Best Places to Work as they shed light on the connection between what they call 4ALL culture and companies that are more innovative, creative, and are more likely to thrive during economic recessions. You will also hear from the folks at OneLogin in a video put together by Dr. Matthew Lippincott.

“Inspiring others by articulating a shared set of values and goals offers a leader one of the most effective ways to motivate people, to create a shared sense of pride and loyalty, and to create the state where people want to give their best effort.” –from Inspirational Leadership: A Primer
AI has matched or beat humans on measures of mental proficiency, and the AI advantage will only grow with time as the technology gets faster and better.
So where does that leave us humans?

This month's newsletter looks at the competitive advantage of being human and the essential skills leaders (and all people) will need in the age of artifical intelligence.

Focus is an underlying skill we would all do well to cultivate for many reasons, stronger relationships among them.
Which matters more for success in a startup: your IQ or your people skills?

Both matter to some degree, of course.

But a massive study of more than 65,000 entrepreneurs found their emotional intelligence seems the key to their success: emotional intelligence was twice as important as their mental ability.

In this month's newsletter, I share some of the latest research on emotional intelligence along with book suggestions and upcoming podcasts to look out for.

“Leaders should try to frame ‘what women want’ as ‘what people want’ so that workplace changes get implemented. Men and women often want similar things, such as getting paid, promoted and evaluated fairly. But companies also need to collect and act on data around important differences, like the way women’s personal lives and responsibilities can create tension with their work.” –Georgene Huang
Mindful pausing with Googler Rachael O'Meara, where we talk about what the research shows on meditation and how it benefits emotional intelligence. bit.ly/pausegoleman

Coaching and/or mentoring someone starts with the intention of furthering growth and development to reach their own goals, not the goals you have set for them.
Pairing assessments with direct feedback and a regular practice of self-reflection can help leaders become more self-aware.
It was a pleasure to visit Cali, Colombia for the first time. I enjoyed discussing the theme of well-being at #ExposerCoomeva2018.

Given the multiple crises unfolding around the world and in the United States, people need resources and inspiration to care for their well-being and their communities. My good friend and colleague, Richard Davidson - along with his team at Center for Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin–Madison
- is offering a week-long series of online events with lively conversation, well-being tips, and the opportunity to hear from mental health experts and special guests, including a recorded dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The World We Make events lead with the big ideas and knowledge people can use in this moment to promote well-being. Topics will be broad and relevant to people’s daily lives.

There is no one-size-fits-all leadership style. Any given day could require several approaches.
While coaching and counseling increasingly share practices, it is vital that coaches understand the line between the two as well as red flags to watch for.
