New York always comes back—and there is no better demonstration of that than the World Trade Center. Today we took another big step toward fulfilling the work of rebuilding Lower Manhattan—topping off the new Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center, which will be spectacular. Opening in 2023, it will be home to theater, dance, music, film, and chamber opera performances that celebrate our shared humanity—and it will welcome artists and visitors from around the world with programming and special events.

I’ve always valued the right to vote. As a kid, I remember escorting senior citizens to the polls on election day. Twice, I had the honor of giving my arm to our town’s most revered resident - Amelia Earhart’s mother.

She hadn’t been able to vote for most of her life. But I helped enable her.

The right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights in American democracy - and must be protected. As president, I’ll ensure the security and integrity of our elections.

Congratulations to the impressive collection of leaders and innovators receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Biden today. Together, they have made our country better and stronger, and it’s great to see their invaluable contributions recognized with the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ $1 billion gift to The Johns Hopkins University aims to reduce financial barriers many students face to enrolling at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and to boost financial aid for students pursuing selected graduate degrees offered at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University - Carey Business School, Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), the The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University and upcoming School of Government and Policy.

The Washington Post details how too many students don't even consider medical school because of the cost. I hope this gift inspires others to action. https://lnkd.in/eTwjrbZN
Great to join Bloomberg LP employees today to help assemble more than 10,000 relief kits for Afya Foundation so people in high risk areas will have access to the supplies they need this hurricane season before a storm hits. #BloombergService #ImpactInAction

Nobody in our country exercised more influence over global affairs over a longer period of time than Henry Kissinger, and his death is a loss for our country and the world – and for all of us who were fortunate enough to call him a dear friend and mentor. Henry was incredibly kind and unfailingly devoted to his friends – a side of him that the public rarely saw – and endlessly generous with the wisdom gained over the course of an extraordinary life that included escaping Nazi Germany for New York, serving in World War II, and rising to become one of the most consequential public figures in American history, more so than many presidents. His legacy will shape the world for decades and even centuries to come. I’ll miss him dearly, and my heart goes out to Nancy and her family.

Filling the funding gap left by the federal government, Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat will strengthen its capacity to support developing countries working to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The U.S. pledged to work with the rest of the world to fight climate change – and we’re doubling down on that commitment, with or without Washington.
Dr. Ruth was an American original - a trailblazing voice whose disarming and insightful advice helped improve millions of relationships. She was as funny as she was fearless - which is saying an awful lot - and I was lucky to call her a friend.

It's Pride Weekend in New York City - as Bloomberg LP HQ shines with rainbow lights we celebrate how far we've come - and how far we still have to go - in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

Bloomberg Philanthropies is expanding its work with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign and other environmental groups, advancing efforts to eliminate every U.S. coal-fired power plant and transition communities to cleaner energy. That alone will get us about 60 percent toward our Paris commitment. Climate action from cities, states and businesses will get us the rest of the way there – without the support of the federal government.
Clean energy innovations supported by Bill Gates and Breakthrough Energy can improve and save lives today, and leave a better world for tomorrow. It was inspiring to see so many ready to accelerate that work at Breakthrough Summit and London Climate Action Week.

Great to see my friend António Guterres be reappointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations - well deserved. Collaboration is crucial to tackling global challenges, and I look forward to continuing our work together fighting climate change.

Investing in early childhood learning is one of the biggest ways to make a difference in our children's lives.

Right now, our approach to early learning is fractured. Here's my plan:
Thank you to the 130 Bloomberg LP volunteers who painted this new community art installation outside our London office, celebrating the LGBT+ community—glad I could be with them today to see it.

We’re glad to be working with Ford Foundation and other partners on America’s Cultural Treasures, an initiative to help ensure that vitally important arts organizations of color can withstand the pandemic – and thrive in the future.
21 years ago today, the Last Column was removed from Ground Zero, marking an end to recovery efforts. Just as we will never forget those who died on the day of the attacks, we will never forget the sacrifices of those who did so much to help our city in the aftermath.

I encourage you to visit the Memorial Glade at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, which was built to honor their sacrifices, or go to 911memorial.org and leave a tribute in remembrance of all they did, and what they gave.

On Saturday mornings in the winter growing up, I went to the Museum of Science for lectures that introduced the natural and physical world in a way my school could not. Each week, for two hours, I sat spellbound as an instructor brought snakes, porcupines, and owls for us to hold; demonstrated the basic laws of physics with hands-on experiments; and quizzed us on every museum exhibit. All the kids—including me—tried to show off by having every answer. This competition taught the value of precise observation, attention to detail, and careful listening. Once the question concerned the age of a tree whose five-foot cross section was displayed in the museum upstairs. The exhibit had great historical events marked by a light bulb at each appropriate tree ring, from the current-day outside circle back to the tree’s germination, centuries earlier, at the center of the display. The question was asked about “the redwood tree.” We were suitably frustrated by an instructor who refused to accept what we all knew was the “right” answer, until someone realized the tree cross section was not from a redwood at all, but rather from a giant sequoia—a related but slightly different variety. Listen, question, test, think: Those instructors taught me the value of intellectual honesty and scholarship years before college.

Great to see the New York State legislature ban cell phones in schools, a step we took in NYC nearly 20 years ago. Unfortunately for students and teachers, the policy was ended by the next administration. Experience and studies both show that cell phones in school are harmful to student learning. All states should follow New York. https://bloom.bg/4i2MpDg
The story of the Tulsa Race Massacre is not just one of the ugliest chapters in American history. It’s part of a 400 year history of racial oppression that systematically robbed generations of Black Americans of their labor and wealth and denied them an equal opportunity to pursue the American dream.

In September, Bloomberg Philanthropies launched the Greenwood Initiative to accelerate the pace of wealth accumulation for Black families and address decades of underinvestment in Black communities: https://lnkd.in/dUdgHag

In 2015, Mayor Anne Hidalgo and I convened hundreds of mayors to discuss how we could reduce emissions in cities  on the sidelines of COP21 where the historic Paris Agreement was delivered. Cities showed their commitment to setting ambitious targets, implementing practical solutions, pushing their national governments to make bold commitments, and taking tangible steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Cities are on the frontlines of climate change, and local leaders have an important role to play in taking action. This year at COP28, local leaders will have a significant role as Bloomberg Philanthropies and COP28 UAE will host the first COP-hosted Local Climate Action Summit. With increased collaboration across all levels of government, we can make progress faster. #ThrowbackThursday

In government and in business, nothing is more important to success than your team.

Great work is never accomplished by one person - and good leaders share the credit when the team succeeds, and accept responsibility when things fall short. They swap out “I“ and “me“ for “we“ and “us.“ People are the most important element in any organization — and that will never change.
One of the things I love most about my travels is meeting with colleagues at Bloomberg offices around the world.

I recently visited team members in Paris and Frankfurt, where I also spoke with Frans Timmermans and business leaders about the urgency of big challenges like climate change. In Paris, I toured the new Norman Foster exhibition at Centre Pompidou which highlights many of his iconic creations throughout the world, including our Bloomberg headquarters in London.
It is always an honor to visit The National September 11 Memorial & Museum—but that is especially true this week. Today, I was glad to do it with Governor Kathy Hochul.

This is a critical moment for New York. To come out of it stronger than we were before, we need all hands-on-deck. So the city and state need her leadership – and she needs our support.

The FDA's announcement that it will 'clear e-flavored cigarettes from the market' is the right one, but words are not enough. This decision is long overdue - the timeline for action is yesterday, not tomorrow. The agency must now move quickly to adopt a flavor ban that is comprehensive and that takes effect immediately. And it's up to us, the public, to hold them accountable – and I intend to do exactly that. https://lnkd.in/dXkRH9b
The U.S. is on course for fiscal breakdown. Unless Congress and the administration change course and get serious about deficit reduction, Americans will face devastating economic consequences. https://bloom.bg/4iUQqeb
Soda taxes work. A study of 5 US cities showed that purchases of sugary drinks went down when soda taxes were adopted. It's a powerful public health tool that could have a major impact by reducing obesity, diabetes & heart disease that shorten too many lives.
The Climate Finance Leadership Initiative is eliminating barriers to investment & creating market conditions to drive more capital to green projects. This collaboration between India, the UK & industry can create a model for countries around the world.
While political turbulence in Washington has dominated the headlines, the hard work being done by cities is quietly proving to be a powerful counterweight. In my annual letter on philanthropy, learn how Bloomberg Philanthropies is continuing to find new ways to help local leaders tackle their biggest challenges, driving even more bottom-up progress.
Millions of road fatalities and injuries each year could be prevented with stronger laws, infrastructure, and enforcement.

Bloomberg Philanthropies works closely with international partners who are leading the way, and to shine a spotlight on their progress and the need for more of it, we celebrated these awardees at our first-ever Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Excellence in Road Safety.

Please join me in congratulating Argentina, Bogotá (Colombia), Tunisia, and Pleiku City (Viet Nam) for their policies and political courage in making more of the world’s roads safer.

If we want to tackle climate change and improve people’s health, we have to accelerate our move away from coal.

More can and must be done—and in this piece, Frans Timmermans and I outline how. https://cnn.it/3lu8SgT
The Defense Innovation Board will bring new ideas and outside perspectives to help ensure the Pentagon has the most cutting-edge technologies and practices, so that our armed forces can most effectively protect our nation, values, interests and allies around the world. I'm honored to work with Secretary Austin, Deputy Secretary Hicks and other senior United States Department of Defense leaders to harness more American innovation in support of our national security. https://bit.ly/3QSz8kn

Together, we can protect the planet - and secure a better future for the people who live on it.
