Bloomberg Philanthropies’ $1 billion gift to The Johns Hopkins University aims to reduce financial barriers many students face to enrolling at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and to boost financial aid for students pursuing selected graduate degrees offered at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University - Carey Business School, Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), the The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University and upcoming School of Government and Policy.

The Washington Post details how too many students don't even consider medical school because of the cost. I hope this gift inspires others to action. https://lnkd.in/eTwjrbZN
Great to join Bloomberg LP employees today to help assemble more than 10,000 relief kits for Afya Foundation so people in high risk areas will have access to the supplies they need this hurricane season before a storm hits. #BloombergService #ImpactInAction

Nobody in our country exercised more influence over global affairs over a longer period of time than Henry Kissinger, and his death is a loss for our country and the world – and for all of us who were fortunate enough to call him a dear friend and mentor. Henry was incredibly kind and unfailingly devoted to his friends – a side of him that the public rarely saw – and endlessly generous with the wisdom gained over the course of an extraordinary life that included escaping Nazi Germany for New York, serving in World War II, and rising to become one of the most consequential public figures in American history, more so than many presidents. His legacy will shape the world for decades and even centuries to come. I’ll miss him dearly, and my heart goes out to Nancy and her family.

Great to see my friend AntĂłnio Guterres be reappointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations - well deserved. Collaboration is crucial to tackling global challenges, and I look forward to continuing our work together fighting climate change.

Thank you to the 130 Bloomberg LP volunteers who painted this new community art installation outside our London office, celebrating the LGBT+ community—glad I could be with them today to see it.

We’re glad to be working with Ford Foundation and other partners on America’s Cultural Treasures, an initiative to help ensure that vitally important arts organizations of color can withstand the pandemic – and thrive in the future.
On Saturday mornings in the winter growing up, I went to the Museum of Science for lectures that introduced the natural and physical world in a way my school could not. Each week, for two hours, I sat spellbound as an instructor brought snakes, porcupines, and owls for us to hold; demonstrated the basic laws of physics with hands-on experiments; and quizzed us on every museum exhibit. All the kids—including me—tried to show off by having every answer. This competition taught the value of precise observation, attention to detail, and careful listening. Once the question concerned the age of a tree whose five-foot cross section was displayed in the museum upstairs. The exhibit had great historical events marked by a light bulb at each appropriate tree ring, from the current-day outside circle back to the tree’s germination, centuries earlier, at the center of the display. The question was asked about “the redwood tree.” We were suitably frustrated by an instructor who refused to accept what we all knew was the “right” answer, until someone realized the tree cross section was not from a redwood at all, but rather from a giant sequoia—a related but slightly different variety. Listen, question, test, think: Those instructors taught me the value of intellectual honesty and scholarship years before college.

Great to see the New York State legislature ban cell phones in schools, a step we took in NYC nearly 20 years ago. Unfortunately for students and teachers, the policy was ended by the next administration. Experience and studies both show that cell phones in school are harmful to student learning. All states should follow New York. https://bloom.bg/4i2MpDg
In government and in business, nothing is more important to success than your team.

Great work is never accomplished by one person - and good leaders share the credit when the team succeeds, and accept responsibility when things fall short. They swap out “I“ and “me“ for “we“ and “us.“ People are the most important element in any organization — and that will never change.
One of the things I love most about my travels is meeting with colleagues at Bloomberg offices around the world.

I recently visited team members in Paris and Frankfurt, where I also spoke with Frans Timmermans and business leaders about the urgency of big challenges like climate change. In Paris, I toured the new Norman Foster exhibition at Centre Pompidou which highlights many of his iconic creations throughout the world, including our Bloomberg headquarters in London.
It is always an honor to visit The National September 11 Memorial & Museum—but that is especially true this week. Today, I was glad to do it with Governor Kathy Hochul.

This is a critical moment for New York. To come out of it stronger than we were before, we need all hands-on-deck. So the city and state need her leadership – and she needs our support.

The FDA's announcement that it will 'clear e-flavored cigarettes from the market' is the right one, but words are not enough. This decision is long overdue - the timeline for action is yesterday, not tomorrow. The agency must now move quickly to adopt a flavor ban that is comprehensive and that takes effect immediately. And it's up to us, the public, to hold them accountable – and I intend to do exactly that. https://lnkd.in/dXkRH9b
The Climate Finance Leadership Initiative is eliminating barriers to investment & creating market conditions to drive more capital to green projects. This collaboration between India, the UK & industry can create a model for countries around the world.
Millions of road fatalities and injuries each year could be prevented with stronger laws, infrastructure, and enforcement.

Bloomberg Philanthropies works closely with international partners who are leading the way, and to shine a spotlight on their progress and the need for more of it, we celebrated these awardees at our first-ever Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards for Excellence in Road Safety.

Please join me in congratulating Argentina, Bogotá (Colombia), Tunisia, and Pleiku City (Viet Nam) for their policies and political courage in making more of the world’s roads safer.

If we want to tackle climate change and improve people’s health, we have to accelerate our move away from coal.

More can and must be done—and in this piece, Frans Timmermans and I outline how. https://cnn.it/3lu8SgT
The more the private and public sectors work together, the more we can achieve.

Together, we can protect the planet - and secure a better future for the people who live on it.
