Throwback to 2019.

I was in first year of college attending my first ever hackathon.

I and my friend Saransh built a tool in 24 hrs.

But when I went up to the stage to explain it to the judges, I FROZE!🤯

I couldn't speak a word.

I was stammering and started shivering.

We lost that hackathon but that night, I realised something:

I could be the best developer in the world,

But if I cannot sell what I've built, WHAT'S the point?

💡You're just as good as how you can communicate.

The SINGLE most important skill that helped me stand out was my ability to communicate with confidence and clarity.

This 20 year old guy has just raised Rs. 2.5 Crores to disrupt the FMCG supply chain space, a $500Bn market.🔥🚀

Today, I met Pravas Chandragiri in Bengaluru, who’s building Soptle , a SaaS-led B2B Retail commerce platform.

Soptle enables FMCG manufacturers to scale their business through their Cross Soptle manufacturing partner network which consists of 50,000+retailers today. Manufacturers can increase sales to retailers in other geographies by enhancing their utilisation capacity.

Pravas comes from the small town of Balasore from Odisha. At the age of 17, when he went for IIT JEE coaching in Bhubaneswar, he quickly realised that he was more interested in building a venture. Since his father owned Kirana stores, he quickly learned how the FMCG supply chain works.

He then launched a networking platform called RFT(Rural Future Technology) where he connected 1200 Kirana stores across 9 districts of Odisha and successfully introduced 20+ regional brands to them. The venture generated an annual turnover of 60 lakhs.

After realising the opportunity and the advantage of scale through digital, he launched Soptle.

I love Pravas’s drive towards building a big business by cutting the middleman and risks involved in expanding a business in the FMCG sector.📈
I found him to be passionate and enthusiastic for scaling fast and executing.

With a profit per employee of 1 Cr, Zerodha's growth has been truly phenomenal over the past 5-7 years.🚀

Here are the 3 problems they sought to solve when they started Zerodha:

💡1. Lack of financial literacy
Few years ago, except the elite few, most people were not aware of how the stock markets worked. Zerodha launched Varsity with an aim to spread financial literacy for everyone.

By doing so, they converted non customers into customers.

💡2. Abnormally high brokerages
Before Zerodha, if you were to invest 1Lakh, brokers would ask 3-4K as brokerages.

To attract newbie investors, Zerodha reduced the fees to just Rs. 20 per transaction on intraday.
Making it much more feasible for the general public to start investing.

💡3. Tedious account opening process
Back in the days, to open a trading account one had to fill numerous forms, submit several documents & stand in long queues.

To solve this, Zerodha came up with a website which was extremely user friendly and made the entire account opening process smooth and transparent.

👉What's more interesting is that majority of the growth of Zerodha was fuelled by word of mouth marketing and referrals, contrary to other brokers who had to spend massive amounts on paid marketing to grow.

Perfect example of building the best product and having a seamless customer experience.💯

Exactly 15 years ago, the first iPhone was launched by Steve Jobs with a first of its kind capacitive touchscreen and an isomorphic OS.

While some people like Steve Balmer laughed at the idea of not having a keypad and was confident that it would never be useful for work, the iPhone turned out to be a huge hit!📈

It's crazy how this one event led to the birth of the trillion dollar smartphone industry we know of today and has been a major contributor to Apple's revenue.
