Innovative Solutions to Plastic Waste: Sungai Design's Vision for Sustainable Furniture ♻️

Indonesia is grappling with a plastic waste crisis, but Sungai Design is turning the tide. As a creative initiative stemming from the family-run nonprofit Sungai Watch, Sungai Design is transforming the plastic collected from polluted rivers into beautifully designed, long-lasting furniture.

With Indonesia being the second-largest contributor to plastic pollution globally, the urgency for change is clear. Since 2020, the Bencheghib family has led efforts to capture river-borne waste before it reaches the ocean by installing floating barriers. To date, they’ve installed 270 barriers, set up eight sorting centers, and gathered over 1,800 metric tons of plastic.

Now, Sungai Design has taken these efforts one step further, launching its first product— the Ombak chairs, each made from 2,000 plastic bags. These chairs represent a bold fusion of sustainability and design.

While challenges remain in refining the production process, the team is ready to scale their impact with support from corporate sponsors, grants, and donations. With determination, Sungai Design is on a mission to help build a cleaner, greener future for Indonesia and beyond.

What is a tsunami?
A tsunami is a series of huge waves caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanoes, or landslides. These waves move extremely fast—up to 800 km/h—and can cause massive destruction when they hit land.

Did you know?

✔️ The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was one of the deadliest, affecting 14 countries and taking over 230,000 lives.

✔️ Tsunamis can happen with little warning. Signs like the sea suddenly pulling back or strong shaking are important to watch for.

✔️ Even though we can’t stop tsunamis, better warning systems and education have helped save many lives.

Watching this video reminded me how important it is to be prepared and to help others understand these natural disasters.
