Recruiters and hiring managers are not rejecting you.

They are rejecting their perception of you.

Assuming you have the skills to do the job, it means you need to work on:

1. Your story - tailor it to their needs

2. Your preparation - never be surprised. Know the company, the role and the requirements, and prepare your answers and examples for that specific interview in advance.

3. Your confidence and presentation skills - practice, practice, practice

Rejection doesn't mean you need to STOP

It means something needs to CHANGE

You need to learn from your experience and take the necessary steps to improve

Every rejection is a lesson that takes you one step closer to success!

When I left my first leadership role

I wrote a thank you letter to every one of my employees.

It was a personal note where I complimented their strengths

and praised the work they have done.

I spent 4.5 years with many of the team members and

wanted to make sure they knew I appreciate them.

3 years later I dropped by the office for a visit.

As I was greeting different team members I noticed one of

my employees had that card pinned to their board.

When I asked them about it they smiled and said that letter

was the nicest thing anyone had told them.

They kept that letter to motivate themselves to do better.

I got goosebumps when I heard that. I never thought my

thank you note could have such an impact on someone.

At that moment I realized just how much words matter and

decided I'll never wait for a big event like a departure to give

someone a compliment.

Next time your team member, your employee, or your
manager delivers results - recognize their achievement.
Compliment them for a job well done.

People learn from feedback, but they only take action to
improve when they believe in themselves.

Words matter, empower others with your words.

My boss told me I didn't have what it takes.

He was wrong.

But I couldn't see it at the time.

I started questioning myself

Doubted every decision

Made myself small.

I believed the lie

And as a result started living up to it.

How could I not believe it?

After all, your boss knows, right?

Wrong.

One person's opinion isn't reality. It's just an opinion.

But it's easy to believe a lie that comes from authority.

It took me a while, but I got him off the pedestal.

I had an undeniable stack of proof that helped:

↳ 10+ years of being a high performer
↳ 3 managers who thought I was exceptional
↳ Dozens of employees who valued me as a leader

After 6 months of abuse I walked away.

Took my incompetence somewhere else...

↳ Got 10 promotions in 15 years (many after I left)
↳ Was headhunted by unicorn startups
↳ Became an award winning VP
↳ Built a successful business

Imagine what my life would look like if I took his word.

You can't let one person's opinion decide your future.

Unless they have undeniable proof, it's just an opinion.

And you know what they say about opinions...

(Opinions are like a@@holes; everybody has one and they usually stink)

P.S. You can be the whole package and just be in the wrong place.
Don’t forget that!

Hey Maya, how did you get to work for Microsoft and
Google? What's the secret?

I only had to do one thing to get these opportunities and you can do it too. Are you ready?

I worked my a@@ off!

I got my job at Microsoft through a 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹.

The people who hired me were my clients a few years

earlier when I worked for an agency. They reached out to

me because they remembered me and the results I

delivered when we worked together.

I was 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗱 to Google by a former manager who believed

I was uniquely positioned to solve the problem the team at

Google was facing. I had more than a decade of experience

when I got there, I wasn't fresh out of college.

I didn't magically land these jobs, I worked FOR YEARS to earn these opportunities.

You don't have to start your career working for the biggest

companies in the world - you can work your way up there.

Instead of looking for shortcuts focus on doing the work:

1) Get experience (any experience)
2) Show results
3) Gain a reputation that opens doors

There is more than one way to get your dream job, build a path that works for you.

I moderated a panel last week and I sucked.

seriously. It wasn't pretty.

I've waited 5 months to feel confident enough to speak about this

topic, I prepared for it, wrote down my answers

and yet, it wasn't my best performance.

Why?

I spoke publically dozens of times before...

this should have been a walk in the park.

Here is the thing, much of my confidence comes from knowing

the topic inside and out.

This was a new topic in my arsenal. So I fumbled a little.

It's the same with your career.

No matter how senior your role

No matter how much experience you acquire,

there will always be something new you've never done before.

Something you may suck at so badly at first,

you'll feel like quitting.

Don't.

If you just get through those few uncomfortable firsts

you'll get better.

You'll learn.

And you'll grow.

If you quit, you'll never know whom you could have become.
