Remembering my dad today on his birthday â he would have been 103. Dad led an extraordinary life and was smart and quick-witted.
While he could always make us laugh, he was also quiet, always caring and comforting â calling me âdear boyâ even when I was naughty â and full of wonderful advice.
He taught me the power of stories, how to see the humour in everything, how to wear my heart on my sleeve. Most of all, he taught me what it means to be a father and how important family is.
We have a family tradition of calling each other on the birthday of a lost relative - Iâve been on the phone to all my family today to say hello and to sing dad a happy birthday.

I didnât like flying very much (most airlines seemed to be expensive, stuffy, and bland), so I got out a piece of paper and worked out how to start an airline - but do it better. We launched Virgin Atlantic with just one plane and went on from there. More recently, we started a cruise line and followed the same approach of keeping it simple but doing it better. The approach worked again, and Virgin Voyages became the first brand to ever win all five awards at the Cruisersâ Choice Awards this year. I wholeheartedly believe most people are fundamentally kind, decent and want to do good in the world. But when some people get into positions of power, this instinct can sometimes get lost.
This can lead to a dreadful loss of reputation, not just for the individual, but for the country they lead as well. A great reputation takes a long time to build, and a very short time to destroy.
Imagine a land known for opening its arms to newcomers, creating a vibrant, diverse society and an unprecedentedly dynamic economy.
Imagine a land collaborating with the world, trading goods, exchanging ideas, helping other places to grow and thrive while creating new opportunities at home too.
Imagine a land that offers aid to those in need, protects its allies when they are threatened, and always keeps its promises.
Imagine a land that treats all of its citizens equally, providing healthcare, protecting education and sanctifying civil and human rights.
To me, that sounds like a land of kindness and strength. A land of opportunity, you might say. A land of the free, even.
Now imagine the opposite. Picture all of those values being torn down, all those laws being ripped up, all those promises being broken. How overwhelmingly sad.
But kindness is strength. And humanity is remarkably resilient. As James Baldwin said: âThere may not be as much humanity in the world as one would like to see. But there is some. Thereâs more than one would think.â
