BYJUs has laid off recent college graduates - 2022 passouts who just joined 3 months back as Software Engineers from premium colleges in India - Top IITs and NITs.

Imagine a student and his family who would have been very happy, as their son/daughter recently joined their first job!

They were just trying to settle in that they were asked to leave the organization that too just before Diwali.

I got texts from multiple such students from IITs and NITs who were impacted.

I have always admired BYJU'S as company which has changed and has been the torch bearer in Edtech Industry but this is really sad on the part of BYJUs they should atleast have taken a call and done something.

Moreover, they have already made offers to a lot of students passing out in 2023 from Top Colleges, now they are also very uncertain what is going to happen!

Imagine someone's first stint in career starts with a layoff in just two months!

Now you want a job with INR 1,00,000 / month , you worked hard you get it .

Now you want INR X,XX,XXX / month and this goes on!

There will be no end point to this!

For some INR 25,000 per month helps satisfies your needs and wants and you live peacefully , whereas for someone INR 1,50,000 is too less to lead a happy life.

Until and unless you feel that you are enjoying what you do and you are learning , running behind the numbers is of useless.

Yes , these numbers signify growth but at what cost - peace , harmony and restlessness and you doing something you don’t like at all!

Find a place where you want to work, the type of work you enjoy doing and enjoy the process!!

Microsoft came on campus and shortlisted 46 students for the interview after online test and resume shortlisting.

In round one, most were eliminated and only 17 went to the round 2, finally after this there were only 2 final selections that to one from Electrical Engineering and another from Electronics and Communications Engineering.

I was talking to a student from my college this morning and she was upset with how this happened as her interview was on point answeringa ll the questions correctly and she was expecting a selection but things always don’t go the way we want.

You would feel you were not lucky, which is the case 50% but it depends on these factors :

- Hiring numbers for the company were low and they couldn’t hire more than 2.

- The interviewer you got was kind of different and had a strict marking as compared to rest.

- Although you felt everything was good, but the way you present your work and answers matter even more.

That might not be your day? Stop blaming yourself or considering yourself as unlucky.

Things will change, it takes time and this is just the start.

Let's analyze why we call some colleges as Tier-3, some as Tier - 2 and some as Tier - 1.

Point 1 : Some say that these colleges have high cutoff for admission and companies visit them for placements. We shouldn't call them Tier-3.

Point 2: Some said that all the placements are offcampus so we should not give credit to campus.

Point 3 : Students from these colleges show their college as Tier-3 just for fame.

But wait, who decided upon if your college should be placed in Tier-1 or Tier 2 or Tier 3?

The factors that decide the Tier of college are :

1. ROI (Return on Investment) : If students are getting good returns after completing their degree.

2. Research : Good research opportunities - Writing Research Papers, participating in conferences.

3. Admission Criteria : What is the basis of admission, what is the level of students, is it tough to make to these colleges?

and some more factors like infrastructure, etc but are of less significance.

If we carefully analysze, can't students play are part in all the above factors gradually if not immediately?

Even if a single batch of Students is aware and they crack amazing companies - on/off campus - won't this help increase competition in the junior batches and batches to come!!

So we can say that,
“ Ek accha batch, college ki history sudhaar skta hai “.

No company is visiting to hire Data Scientist/ML Engineer in my college.


From July 15th, the placement season started and more than 15 companies had their Online Assessment but no company is hiring for Data Science roles and I did only Data Science courses.

This is Day 2 of #CampusStories where we decode the stories from this Placement Season.

Everyone is talking about AI/ML and how GenAI will change the landscape, its correct but why no companies are hiring for Data Science roles in my college. This is because :
- Data Science roles are more of research and programming and companies prefer someone who has a research background probably someone with a Masters or a PhD in Data Science for these roles.
- ⁠The demand for these roles is there but as experienced engineers and not freshers.
- ⁠Doing only Data Science Courses would not get you a job, your CV requires real skills.
- ⁠For these roles, companies won’t come to hire - you have to showcase your skillset in Kaggle competitions or Data Science Hackathons and you will get these roles.
- ⁠Doing internships in smaller startups during college would be very helpful if you are clear that you are built for Data Science roles.

But even if you are looking for such roles, the advice would be to strengthen your problem solving skills, learn fundamentals of computer science and this will open you various avenues. For e.g. You get hired in an MNC for a Software role but you can work there and switch internally to a Data Science role if you have skills.

So its not about the role, but more about how well you are with the skillset and hunger - you will ace it.

Remeber whenever you feel demotivated the next time , remember WHY YOU STARTED?

Try to visualize your journey from a kindergarten kid to a college going student , you will remeber the struggle that you have went through.

and you will feel like you can achieve whatever you want, your journey of struggle for the past 16 years and reaching a point where you are would be the true source of motivation for you!

So next time you lack motivation, try answering this question!

HackwithInfy, TCS CodeVita , Capgemini Tech Challenge and many more competitions are not happening this year 😔

With big tech product based companies who have been laying off employees from the start of this year , even the service based company hiring
numbers have been on a decline.

Generally every year around 2 Lakh - 2.5 Lakh students are hired by these service based companies through various onccampus,offcampus hiring challenges but this year the scene is different.

No big hiring challenges , no good hiring numbers oncampus and even joining of previous batches is still on hold.

The market is full of talent and dissatisfaction on even after working hard to prepare , the job market is very tight.
