For the first time, we can put a price tag on cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. We now call upon the world - governments, companies, individuals - to make this cleanup happen.
Another day in the office for System 03 in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. 🌊

Some facts:

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) is the largest accumulation of floating ocean plastic in the world.

GPGP is located halfway between Hawaii and California.

The GPGP covers an estimated surface area twice the size of Texas or three times the size of France.

System 03 is big. It has a floating barrier approximately 2.2 km (1.4 miles) long.

So far, we've cleaned up over 445,000 kg / 981,000 lbs of plastic, but there's still a long way to go.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch can be cleaned at a lower cost than what the USA spends on Halloween decorations each year.

And yet - the (amount of) trash we pull out from the GPGP and rivers daily is scary.

As a non-profit organization, we can't do it alone. Time for action?

We are pleased to announce that on 29 May 2024, Boyan Slat and Minister Mark Harbers signed an amendment to update The Ocean Cleanup's unique covenant with the State of the Netherlands relating to our cleanup activities in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The original tailor-made covenant (signed in 2018) demonstrates our determination to deploy the system in line with international rules and regulations with respect for the environment and maritime safety.

Now our ocean system has been validated and we are preparing to scale up, we are pleased to have signed the updated covenant as it marks an important milestone in our mission to rid the oceans of plastic. We are grateful for the generous support of the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat during this process.

Deployment of Interceptor 015 is in progress in the largest gully of Kingston, Sandy Gully, alongside the local community.πŸ‡―πŸ‡²

Interceptor 015 is 260m long and consists of 44 floating boom sections. We expect it to stop up to 990 tons of trash/year from flowing into the Caribbean Sea.

This will be our eighth river deployment in Kingston, Jamaica, made possible in partnership with Clean Harbours Jamaica and GraceKennedy Ltd..

Our river deployments are intended to act as catalysts within a community, intercepting plastic and providing solutions while enabling a community to drive systemic change further upstream. Our project in Kingston, Jamaica, provides a good example of this in action.
