I interviewed someone with a 17 month gap on their resume.

Me: I’m just curious, why the gap? Did your employer lay you off?

Him: No, I quit. My fathers health declined. So I relocated to take care of him and spend as much time with him as I could before I had to say goodbye.

Me: That says a lot about who you are. We can always start a new job but we can never get our time back with the people we love.

He will get the chance to work with us.

WHY? A person who knows when to leave a job to be there for their family is the type of person I want to work with.

Who agrees ? 👇👇👇
In 2008 we applied to Dragon's Den & got as far as a screen test and we pitched our hearts out before the producers rejected us.

They deemed Martin & myself not investment worthy.

We were totally crushed.

We were prepared to offer the Dragons 20% for £100,000. Based on our latest BrewDog valuation, that investment would now be worth almost £360m meaning the Dragon's missed out on by far the best deal in Den history.

We got over the rejection eventually. But it took a while.

STOP ASKING CANDIDATES:

1. Why do you want to work here?
2. What's your greatest weakness?
3. What would your last boss say about you?
4. Why should we hire you?

WHY ARE THESE BAD QUESTIONS?

1. The candidate doesn't know whether they want the job yet. They came to the interview to learn more; you invited them to learn more about them. You wouldn't like it if the candidate asked you, “Why do you want to hire me?“ so don't ask “Why do you want the job?“

2. It is just an opinion that people have “weaknesses;“ it is not a scientific fact. Even if they do have weaknesses, why would it be any of your business what a candidate's weaknesses are? You are not about to share your failings, so don't ask for theirs. Ask what they bring to the job, instead.

3. Some managers are amazing leaders and some are terrible at their jobs. Just because someone is a boss doesn't mean their opinion matters.

4. The candidate isn't going to meet the other candidates for the job. YOU know what you're looking for; they don't.

ASK THESE QUESTIONS INSTEAD:

1. What interested you in the job? (By the way, here's what we liked about your resume.)

2. How do you think your background & talents suit this job?

3. What else would you like to know about the job?

4. How would this job advance your career?
Someone shared a post saying she was looking for a job. There were 0 likes and no comment. So I liked, commented and tagged a couple of recruiters. Last week she sent me a message:

“Brigette, thank you so much for taking the time to comment on my post. The views on my post went to 300,000. Recruiters contacted me. Someone even volunteered to review my resume for free. I now have 2 interviews and I did not have any for the last 3 months. I am so excited! I only wish there were more people like you.”

Job searching is emotionally draining. So whenever you see such posts, share or drop a like or comment. It only takes a few seconds but could be a lifechanger for someone.

You may not be able to get them a job, but someone who might be able to, may see it. This is what LinkedIn and true networking is about. Let's help each other out.
Agree?

Stop ghosting candidates.

It takes time to respond to job applicants. But it took them even longer to apply.

A little communication goes a long way.

My neighbor lost his corporate job two months ago. To make ends meet he started cleaning cars, painting homes, and even cutting grass. Some of his colleagues laughed. They thought it was “beneath him.”

His only focus was to provide for his family.

Fast forward, people are happy with his work and have referred friends. He’s making almost as much money as he was before.

Defeat is a choice. He made a choice to not accept defeat. Never down someone who refuses to give up.

Employers,

Stop asking candidates to have a degree when:
a) you pay $14.00 an hour with no benefits
b) the skills for the job can easily be taught
c) your job descriptions don’t match reality

Sincerely,

Everyone and their mother.

When I find myself in tough conversations,
when I am being held accountable,
when I am called to unlearn, relearn, or just learn —
This is my mantra. It’s been a game-changer.

Surviving this crisis will take a shift in mindset, and that’s tougher than we think - especially when we’re afraid.

Fear and anxiety can drive us to become very self-focused. This global pandemic is a real case of “getting sick together” or “staying well together.” Our choices affect everyone around us. There is no such thing as “individual risk” or “individual wellness.”

This is the ultimate reminder that we are inextricably connected to each other. Turning away from collective action right now - as tempting as it is - will only generate more pain.

Owning and embracing our global interconnectedness (from a safe distance) and thinking about others as we make choices is, ironically, our only path to safety for ourselves and the people we love.

We can all get really shitty really fast when we’re afraid. I get it. I’m using deep breaths along with my personal mantra: ” Try to be scared without being scary.” Feel free to borrow both - they can help.

It’s also really normal for everyone to be on our nerves: The people who aren’t following the rules, the 10-second hand washers, etc. I get that too. TRUST ME.

But, like it or not, we just can’t give up on people. We’re all we have.

Stay awkward, brave, and kind. Love each other. Spread calm.

xo,
BB

I was miserable in my first job. I was underpaid, undervalued, and underwater.

But I learned some important lessons:

1. No amount of hard work will fix a toxic work environment. ⏰

2. Your time and energy are valuable - regardless of how much someone is paying you. 💵

3. Others can't always see how much you're worth. That's their problem. 🔮

Shoutout to the mentors all over the world helping others recognize their worth. It literally changes lives.

Even as the world works to stop the novel coronavirus and begin recovering from it, we also need to act now to avoid a climate disaster.
This hero is playing a critical role in Kenya’s preparations to tackle COVID-19 by scaling up medical oxygen supplies that will be needed to keep the most critically ill patients alive.

Only when diverse perspectives are included, respected, and valued can we start to get a full picture of the world: who we serve, what they need, and how to successfully meet people where they are.

Daring leaders fight for the inclusion of all people, opinions, and perspectives because that makes us all better and stronger. That means having the courage to acknowledge our own privilege, and staying open to learning about our biases and blind spots. It's also listening, centering, and honoring stories that reflect experiences that are different than our own.

Courage is listening, learning, unlearning, knowing when to lead, and knowing when to let others lead.

E ele me respondeu: Criatividade.

Thanks to a teacher determined to offer computer science at my all-girls high school, I learned to love programming early on. It changed my life and set me down the path to a career in tech. I think every student should have the same chance.

Thank you to all of the teachers and organizations that are working to make computer science available and accessible to all students, everywhere.

By helping students imagine new possibilities for themselves, they’re doing the same thing for students across the country that my teacher once did for me. #CSEdWeek

- estude o mercado

I’m teaming up with Rashida Jones for a new podcast limited series starting Monday. Each week, we’ll talk about some of the biggest issues facing our world with special guests including authors, experts, and friends.
Thanks to the work of this father–daughter dynamic duo, Bangladesh is moving toward a future of fewer disease outbreaks and more children reaching their fifth birthday.

“Should I cut some slides?“ he asked.

“Yes.“ I replied.

“But if I do, I will miss important things.“

I said:
“But if you don't, they'll miss everything.“

Good communication isn’t what you say.
It's what they take away.

Say less, and make it count.

Who’s in? The faster you pedal the faster your car!
Imagine you were born in 1900.

When you're 14, World War I begins and ends when you're 18 with 22 million dead.

Soon after a global pandemic, the Spanish Flu, appears, killing 50 million people. And you're alive and 20 years old.

When you're 29 you survive the global economic crisis that started with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and famine.

When you're 33 years old the nazis come to power.

When you're 39, World War II begins and ends when you're 45 years old with a 60 million dead. In the Holocaust 6 million Jews die.

When you're 52, the Korean War begins.
When you're 64, the Vietnam War begins and ends when you're 75.

A child born in 1985 thinks his grandparents have no idea how difficult life is, but they have survived several wars and catastrophes.

Today we have all the comforts in a new world, amid a new pandemic. But we complain because we need to wear masks. We complain because we must stay confined to our homes where we have food, electricity, running water, wifi, even Netflix! None of that existed back in the day. But humanity survived those circumstances and never lost their joy of living.

A small change in our perspective can generate miracles. We should be thankful that we are alive.
